The scope and sequence of the elementary guidance curriculum is addressed in the areas of self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness. Through lessons planned and delivered by the John H. Shary Elementary Counseling Department, the needs of students are met. These lessons and activities are aligned with the district's Counseling Year at a Glance, the CKH Curriculum, and the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. By following the Texas Model, we are able to target the following areas:
Interpersonal Effectiveness - educating students about communication skills, empathy, and relationship skill sets when working with others
Intrapersonal Effectiveness - helping students build self-awareness, manage emotions, and foster relationship skills
Personal Health and Safety - guiding students to make healthy life choices that embody the whole person while at the same time recognizing risks, and creating a safe and secure environment.
Post-Secondary Education and Career Readiness - exposing students to secondary pathways, post-secondary educational pathways, and linking interests to skill sets for future success.
The counselors at John H. Shary Elementary collected data from teachers, parents, and students in the form of a campus needs assessment. From this needs assessment, Conflict resolution and stress/anxiety, were identified as two areas of high need. Please see the attached lessons below to learn how the needs of the campus were addressed in the form of guidance lessons across grade levels through guidance classes and parent presentations
Perception Data
Student climate surveys indicate that students rate peer respect on campus at 3.4 out of 4.0. This suggests that some students may struggle to consider or understand their peers’ feelings. The empathy lesson directly addresses this by teaching perspective-taking and encouraging kind, thoughtful responses, aiming to enhance students’ sense of safety and connection.
Outcome Data
Discipline data from the 2024–2025 school year showed an increase in incidents such as name-calling, exclusion, and physical altercations among 3rd–6th graders. By teaching empathy skills, students gain a better understanding of how their words and actions affect others. This is expected to reduce negative interactions, strengthen peer relationships, and positively influence discipline outcomes.
Process Data
Process data included the number of empathy lessons delivered and small-group sessions on conflict resolution. Regular monitoring of these data ensures that all students are receiving instruction and support in the skills necessary to achieve the desired outcomes.

COLLABORATION WITH STAKEHOLDERS
John H. Shary Elementary School Counselors work closely with various stakeholders, including parents and community partners, to ensure all areas of the comprehensive school counseling program are effectively addressed. For interpersonal effectiveness, counselors provide parent education workshops, facilitate communication and networking opportunities, and conduct one-on-one parent conferences. Intrapersonal effectiveness is supported through individualized counseling sessions that focus on self-awareness, coping and grounding strategies, stress management, goal setting, conflict resolution, and teamwork. Parents play a vital role in reinforcing their child's personal growth at home, while counselors provide resources and strategies to enhance intrapersonal development.
For post-secondary planning and career readiness, Shary Elementary counselors promote peer education, peer mentoring, and academic support, offering lessons in leadership development and self-directed skills. College and career readiness is further supported through partnerships with Sharyland Pioneer High School CTE Programs, as well as initiatives like Careers on Wheels and Career Spotlight Day.
Personal health and safety is emphasized by equipping students with essential life skills, including making safe and healthy choices, highlighted during Red Ribbon Week. By engaging parents as active partners in their child’s education, these lessons are reinforced, creating a nurturing and supportive environment. This holistic approach addresses immediate needs while fostering long-term growth, helping students make informed decisions and build resilience.
All grade levels received counseling lessons on Empathy. All students wrote a post-it on how they can or have shown empathy in their everyday life and posted it on the Empathy Wall and campus sidewalks. In doing so, students were able to identify at least 3 ways to show empathy with others.
