At John H. Shary Elementary, Mrs. Koeneke and Mrs. Peña proudly serve as school counselors, supporting students, staff, and partnering with families in countless meaningful ways. Through classroom lessons, small groups, and individual counseling, they guide students in building academic skills, social-emotional growth, and positive behavior.
They are active members of ARD and SBDM, PBIS, and CKH campus committees, working hand in hand with teachers and administrators to ensure every child receives the support they need. Beyond the classroom, they partner with parents by offering trainings on programs such as Gifted and Talented and Bilingual education, empowering families with valuable tools and knowledge.
To keep families informed and connected, our counselors share updates through newsletters, parent meetings, the school website, email, and Remind. Most importantly, their approachable presence and open communication make them trusted partners in student success and well-being.

Meet the Counseling Department
At the start of the 2024–2025 school year, the John H. Shary Elementary Counseling Department provided a staff presentation introducing the role of the school counselors and the counseling department on campus. The presentation outlined counselor responsibilities in alignment with the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. The presentation also clarified grade-level counselor assignments, specifying which counselor supports each grade for guidance lessons, individual counseling, and parent conferences. In addition, staff received important information regarding counselor responsibilities such as CPS reporting, student referrals, and access to services.
This beginning-of-year presentation reflects the department’s commitment to visibility, accountability, and collaboration, ensuring that all staff understand how the counseling team serves students, families, and the campus community.
