The "ZEN DEN": Mental Wellness Space
The purpose of the Zen Den is to provide a safe space in which scholars are able to self-regulate, process emotions, refocus and return to class through the use of various approaches and techniques. The goal is to empower scholars to become responsible life-long learners by providing a safe and caring learning environment in which to strengthen their social-emotional development. The Zen Den allows scholars to self-regulate and reflect in a restorative environment allowing them to adopt coping strategies that can be used in future situations across various environments. The objective is to reduce impulsive behavioral outbursts, interpersonal/ intrapersonal challenges and discipline referrals, all of which negatively impact academic performance. Providing a safe space for self-regulation and equipping scholars with practical coping techniques will significantly reduce time spent outside of the instructional environment (visits to assistant principal, nurse, school counselor) thus increasing academic performance.
STUDENT OUTCOME: Responsive Service
"BLG CARES" Mentoring Program
The "BLG CARES" school -based mentoring program is a responsive service that aims to foster connections and build trust between staff members and scholars experiencing difficulties in school. It was conceptualized on the premise that the academic performance of scholars is linked to strong connections and the ability to identify at least one trusted adult on campus. Scholars are nominated by teachers and participate in 4 mentor/ mentee luncheons throughout the school year. Additionally, mentors strive to maintain the trusting relationship by being their champions and demonstrating positive regard toward their mentee. The data on the chart indicates how students in the program performed in 3 areas.
