The Professional School Counselor's Role
The B.L. Gray (BLG) professional school counselors strive to create a culture of connection, belongingness and success by designing and delivering a school counseling program that fosters the academic, career and social-emotional development of all scholars. Additionally, counselors offer services designed to support student wellness, enhance academic performance, and increase participation in post-secondary education. They help scholars achieve success in the educational setting, learn about high school, college and career opportunities and lead healthy rewarding lives.
The Professional School Counselor as Leader and Advocate
B.L. Gray counselors are vital members of the campus leadership team who advocate and collaborate with all stakeholders to promote equity and access for all. This is accomplished by serving in various leadership roles such as process champions for Capturing Kids Hearts (CKH), serving as coordinator for the school-based mentoring program " BLG CARES" , initiating the school's first mental wellness space " The Zen Den" and leading teachers in building their own capacity by equipping them with tools to implement weekly SEL talks known as "Think About It Thursdays". BLG counselors also lead school-wide awareness events throughout the year that serve to strengthen the school culture, climate and relational capacity among the entire learning community. They view parents and community members as partners in education and strive to cultivate a robust culture of communication. Furthermore, BLG counselors believe in the importance of extending their leadership beyond the campus level and have collaborated as district presenters and curriculum writers to create and refine the SEL curriculum at the district level.
