ABOUT US
B. L. Gray Junior High School is the type of school that thrives on the challenge of achieving excellence. Our willingness to seek new and better ways to challenge ourselves and our scholars year in, year out separates us from the rest. Our whole-child approach is genuine and reflects who we are as a school where scholars are safe to take risks without fear of failure, explore possibilities while feeling included, and leave with a set of academic and social emotional skills that will translate to success in the years to come.
The factors that drive our school to achieve the level of success we have attained for our students make us a flagship campus. Our planning for the future starts and stops with the success of every scholar in mind. We consider every scholar's needs when organizing schedules, budgeting for intervention methods and resources, and hiring teachers and support staff. Data is analyzed, trends are noted, and student schedules are organized so every scholar is placed in the most appropriate setting for success.
Our course offerings are centered on challenging all students to achieve optimum success. We are proud of the honors and high school level courses offered at our campus which include the very successful fine arts courses we have. Our school band program is a perennial success, we have a mariachi ensemble that is growing by the year, our drama department produces two plays per year, and our film production, news production and photography courses continue to expand. Our athletics program allows our scholars to participate in a variety of sports throughout the year. Our newly implemented "Esports" program affords participants the opportunity to apply concepts traditionally experienced as part of an athletic team, such as sportsmanship, teamwork and communication. Our recently established "Girl C.O.D.E." club empowers young women to grow in their character and self-confidence by engaging in meaningful discussions and social activities with like-minded peers. Throughout it all, our unwavering dedication to excellence is never compromised. Our faculty is dedicated to continued growth through preparation and training.
Our drive for academic excellence is supported by our understanding that seventh and eighth graders face a unique set of challenges growing up in this day and age. We understand this need and prepare for it by holding informational meetings with the student body. Our school counselors address high impact issues like bullying, harrassment and digital citizenship through guidance lessons, and our guidelines for success focus on pride, integrity and tradition. By being responsive to these needs, B.L. Gray Junior High School fosters a sense of togetherness bound by a shared culture of success. Our students understand that fairness is central to our mission. All scholars are treated equally and equitably, and the Code of Conduct sets the stage for the interactions they have with each other and the adults on campus. Through the use of transformational vocabulary and referring to our students as scholars and sages, we have established a sense of pride and tradition.
Baskell Laverne Gray was born in Lindsay, Oklahoma, on October 8, 1917. He was raised on a farm along with eight brothers and one sister. Mr. Gray graduated with a bachelor's degree in agricultural science from Oklahoma State University and later with a master's degree in school administration from Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas.
He served in the army during World War II and was stationed in England and France as a tech sergeant. He was married to Jean Fallin on December 19, 1947. They had six children.
After the war, he farmed with his brothers in Oklahoma and later in the Rio Grande Valley for several years. In 1954, he started working with the Sharyland Independent School District as a high school teacher and principal. While performing his duties as a principal, he also taught five science classes. After three years as principal, he was elected superintendent in 1958. He still continued to teach two science classes until the Texas Education Agency decided he should not try to do both jobs. B. L. Gray Jr. High School was named in his honor in 1981. He remained superintendent until his retirement in 1983.
