This page provides the latest updates on the Southern Middle School renovation and addition project. Over the next three years, the school will transform with modernized science classrooms, a refreshed cafeteria, expanded hallways, increased natural light, and a secure new main entrance. Upgrades throughout the building will enhance safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency, creating a flexible and inspiring space for students and the community.
Progress at Southern is steady and encouraging. The District can be grateful that the “unclassified construction” clause was approved, as crews have encountered several weeks of unexpected rock removal. Foundations are currently being poured, and fiber pulls are scheduled. The underground water storage system installation is planned for mid-December during which numerous truckloads of stone will be conveyed from Windmill Road to fill and grade the large excavation.
Rough excavation for the underground water storage system is complete. Slab subgrade work for the new Science Wing is finished, and trenching for foundations and underground utilities is underway. Crews have encountered significant subsurface rock, which is included in the construction contract, resulting in a lot of hammering. Steel placement and foundation pours have begun and will continue over the next several weeks.
