NJHS Update for 2021-22 School Year - Posted August 25, 2021
Hello all - I'd like to congratulate all of our new chapter members! It is such an impressive accomplishment and one that I hope each of you are proud of. With that being said, I want to encourage each of you to continue your efforts and pursuit of excellence during the upcoming 2021-22 school year and throughout your membership in the NJHS. You read and pledged allegiance to the National Junior Honor Society creed during your induction ceremony, as a result the expectation would be that you believe in the standards as outlined and that you will strive to meet and even exceed them. We all understand that we sometimes fall short. Setbacks, failure and mistakes are an integral part of learning and growth. With that in mind, I want to remind you that you don't have to do all of this yourselves. Your parents/guardians, teachers, counselors, friends, coaches and many more are here to help. One of the most important skills in life, is the willingness to get your hand up and ask questions and/or for help.
The service hour requirement for NJHS is in effect this year and students will expected to complete and log a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer time. When we speak to students about the service component (even in a non-pandemic year), we define service as a commitment or effort to help/serve others when you have the opportunity to choose to do or be somewhere else. This is general on purpose and allows students to freely give of their time and understand what it really means to serve others.
Finally, we are once again reporting grades on a semester basis this year. Current members must maintain a 90% cumulative average to satisfy the scholarship portion of the society. We encourage students to monitor their grades regularly and check in with their counselor if they have concerns about meeting the requirement as the year progresses.
Have a wonderful school year! Get involved, treat others well, laugh a lot and work hard. Mr. Werley
NJHS Update for 2020-21 school year - Posted December 2, 2020
During these very challenging times – with school closures , remote learning in effect, and numerous restrictions on our students and families it is pertinent that our student’s health and safety be our top priority. With that being said, we wanted to provide an explanation and some flexibility when it comes to the required service hours for NJHS members. Students who have completed the necessary hours will be accepted and should submit those hours to Mr. Werley (wermat@share.wilsonsd.org) via email or share by way of a Google Doc. Our stance on the question of how students can obtain volunteer hours during the pandemic is as such:
In an effort make sure that students are not taking risks ... we will not prohibit a student from joining or maintaining membership based off of a lack of opportunities for service/volunteering. When we speak to students about the service component (even in a non-pandemic year), we define service as a commitment or effort to help/serve others when you have the opportunity to choose to do or be somewhere else. We might suggest that you record these efforts by your son or daughter at home, church or with close friends/family/neighbors, etc. in place of outside opportunities. Ultimately we will not preclude or disallow any service hour submissions or if a student falls short of the required amount. We know that our students and their families would come through, were it not for the limitations we are all experiencing. We hope this explanation helps and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any remaining questions. Additionally, the grade requirements for membership in NJHS will be adjusted to coincide with the new semester grading policy that the building principals shared prior to the school years start.
When grades for the second semester have been completed and high honors status has been identified, membership applications will be shared with eligible candidates in an email. The applications will indicate the due date and should be submitted via email to Mr. Werley by Friday, May 14, 2021. New applications will be reviewed by West’s NJHS committee and candidates will be notified of their status via email shortly after May 15th. In addition, more information will follow regarding our annual induction ceremony. Please email Mr. Werley with any questions or concerns.
