My name is Matthew Werley. I love being a part of the Wilson West family and have been in the role of a middle school counselor since 2003. I grew up in Wisconsin, but have lived in Berks County, PA for most of my life. I graduated from Kutztown Area High School and then went on to attend The University of South Carolina earning a bachelors degree. Since then I have earned Master's degrees in School Counseling from Kutztown University and Education Leadership from Cabrini College. Prior to being a school counselor, I worked for nine years as a Hospital Food Service Director for the Wood Company in Allentown, PA.
My goal as a middle school counselor has always been to be someone that all stakeholders (students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members) can lean on to help in a time of need, facilitate relationships and either answer questions directly or find someone who can. As we all know adolescence can be a difficult time, but it can also be an amazing time of learning, maturation and rapid growth academically, socially and emotionally. I consider it an honor to be an active part of this process for the students at Wilson West and a support for the those individuals who are pushing into our student's lives every day and in so many ways.
As a school counselor we often work through a solution-focused approach and plan to support students primarily through intervention and prevention methods. The cool thing is that I get to help students that are going through rough times. What a privilege! However, I also get to help students, their friends and their families, develop resiliency skills. In this way they will be better prepared when they run into those difficult moments in life. I love what I do and truly believe it is the best job in the world … for me. My hope for each of our current students (and lots of older ones too) is that they find something they are passionate about and that makes them want to work for it with the belief that they can achieve it. Don't hesitate to call, email or stop in. The school counseling department here at West is here for you!
