Homework
Homework will go home on Mondays. Typically, I create a small packet with a cover sheet that explains HW for the week. Please return the HW to school on Friday. We will check it together and also review as needed. Students do not receive a "grade" on the homework. However, I do give them a participation check in the homeroom gradebook. If you are having "one of those weeks" like we all have from time to time (company is in town, your family schedule off due to illness, etc.), please just let me know via email or a note. I am happy to extend the due date for your child. I have found through experience and observation that students who do their homework most of the time are most successful with their academic progress. So, just keep me posted so I am aware to extend. Also, this a good way for your child to develop a routine of study that will carry them forward each school year.

According to research from the Institute of Education, children who read for pleasure do significantly better in school than their peers. There is an expectation that your child should be reading for 15 or more minutes every night. We have a 3rd grade 30 challenge this year! The books will need to be Reading Counts so your child can take the quiz that accompanies the story. If they read a book that doesn't have a RC Quiz, I will give them a book form to fill out instead for 5 points and credit.

Students are tested a minimum of three times each year to establish their Lexile levels (reading level that goes with our school media center books.) They should be reading stories within their Lexile range. Students may take RC quizzes in the morning, independent reading workshop, and as time permits. The HMH Reading App is located on their BPS Launchpad.

Here are the color reading levels: Orange = BR-200, Pink= 201-400, Green=401-600, Blue=601-800, Yellow=801-1000, Red= 1001 and higher

Students will have math and vocabulary homework in addition to the reading. These assignments will not be graded but are expected to be completed by each student and returned to school by the due date.
