We are fortunate to have a dedicated College and Career class that supports seniors during their post-secondary planning. Assignments are structured to enable students to explore and define their individual action plans and meet application deadlines. Self-inquiry and reflection are skill-building practices; whether your post-graduation plans include writing about yourself or not, all students will be required to write personal statements.
In addition, there are multiple sources of writing support including the teacher, experienced college essay reader volunteer(s), and college advisor(s).
You will prepare information about yourself to share with teachers and your counselor who will be writing a letter of recommendation for you.
C&C Class will cover so much more including scholarships, financial aid, and communicating with colleges as needed.
CaliforniaColleges.edu launched in September of 2024 for SFUSD. If you are applying to UC and/or CSU, using this resource will reduce time in inputting each course and grade in the application. All of your courses and grades are already in this system which will be populated into the UC and CSU application with minimal effort.
Every fall many colleges across the country and internationally visit our students to provide college information sessions. These are the College Admission officers that may be part of the review process and help students with all aspects of the application process. It is important to get to know these counselors and ask questions about their college, and a great way to preview a campus!
College Essays
Common App essays: Choose (1) out of (7) topics. This is shared with all colleges you apply to in the Common App.
UC Personal Statements: Choose (4) out of (8) topics. This is shared with any of the nine UC campuses you apply to.
Supplemental Essays: Some college programs require additional essay(s).
CSU: Essays are not required for the California State University system.
Finalize your College List & Be Ready to Submit Applications by Deadlines
Narrow your list of colleges based on major, location, private/public, and other items important to you.
8-12 colleges on your list, including 2-3 target schools, 3-6 match schools, 1-3 reach schools (or 1-3 more match schools if you do not want to apply to reach schools).
Consider (2) schools for Early Action if they offer that type of application.
Keep track of deadlines for your Art/Music/Dance/Design.
Applications must be submitted at least 3-4 days before the deadline in order for you to receive a link to upload a portfolio, audition video, etc;
Letters of Recommendation
Not all schools require letters of recommendation. If you are applying to a college or university that includes this piece in the application process, please have a conversation with your teachers and school counselor at the beginning of the school year (12th grade).
*** Please note that UC's and CSU's schools do not use letters of rec.
All will be reviewed in C&C Class:
Admission types: Learn the difference between "Early Action", "Early Restrictive Action," "Early Decision," "Regular Decision," and "Rolling Admissions"
Application types: Become familiar with the various applications: UC, Cal State Apply, Common App, Coalition App and individual college apps.
Organization of all application requirements
If you have decided to include standardized testing as part of your application (many colleges are test optional or test blind), you will need to determine if they need official scores, or simply allow you to self report until admitted.
*** Please note that UC's and CSU's schools do not accept test scores.
