Before the Unit
Do Now Question: As students enter the room, have the following question displayed (either on the board or with the slide-deck bellow):
"What are the biggest problems faced by people around the world today?"
Discussion: Students may need some extra encouragement to think from the perspective of others and to see the bigger picture.
Have students work in groups to identify the biggest problems. They can either discuss their ideas or write them down, but they should be ready to share with the group.
Tips: They might consider issues in their communities. Don't stop them, it's a good place to start. You could ask them to think as if they are their country’s leader: "think as if you were the president".
Sharing: Ask each group to share their ideas. Write them on the board if possible.
Display: Show the presentation bellow:
Video: Show the video with Emma Watson from the slides.
Discussion: Ask the students to recap what are the 6 innovators from the video and how they improved their communities.
Tips: You can use your own screen that you’re projecting with the game to guide the students.
Display: The slide with all the sustainable development goals. Give the students some time to read through them, and ask them if they have any issues understand one of them.
Ask: Slide 4-6 are calling out to the stories showcased in the video. On each, ask the students to find which of the goals each character has worked on with his idea.
Ask: On slide 7, ask the students to think what will they do. What are the goals they care about?
Note: Once made each paper chain is 10cm long – 17 paper chains will make 1.7m of chain.
Showcase: You can put the classroom chain as a decoration to remind the students what they've chosen.
Ask them to think about some other way they can help achieve those goals after they leave the classroom, when they go home, when they play with their friends.
