Unit 1

Self and Stories

Self and Stories

What impact does the dominant narrative have on the experiences of historically marginalized people? How do race, ethnicity, and culture (among others) shape our personal identity?

In the links and examples on this page, see how SFUSD youth have articulated that personal identity via various media. Unit 1

Student Examples

Lowell High School

Student poster project depicting solidarity, growth, equality, peace and critical consciousness.

 Washington

Students write about their race, ethnicity, nationality, and culture. Later, after learning about CRAASH (classism, racism, ableism, ageism, sexism, and hetereosexism), the 3 I's (institutional, interpersonal, and internalized) of oppression and resistance, they revisit their autoethnographies to apply those concepts

Lincoln High School

Students consider their own identity by beginning with a Road of Life poster.  This unit culminates with an autoethnography where students tell about an experience that defines their identity.
