Matt began his education career at SOTA, first as a student teacher (2009-10) and then as a faculty member in the Theatre Tech program (2010-11), and was here for the birth of the Musical Theatre program and taught in it back when it was located within the Theatre Tech department. He then spent 2011-2020 at Oakland School for the Arts (OSA), becoming the school’s Artistic Director, overseeing nine arts departments for students in grades 6-12 and serving as principal for the arts. Before that he was the director of the Theatre program and on the faculties of the English and Social Science departments. For the Theatre program—which also housed Musical Theatre—he taught acting theory, text and voice, playwriting, directing, and electives on auditioning and Michael Chekhov technique for actors. He is also a college counselor, and at OSA focused on students interested in pursuing a BFA in the various fields of theatre after high school. On the academic side of things, while at OSA he taught AP Literature, 10th grade English, World History, Literary Theory, and Aesthetics.
