Applied Technologies is a new block course that we began offering this year for the 9th grade class. This course provides the students with a hands-on experience covering various topics such as structural design, flight, pneumatics, hydraulics, gearing, and electricity; just to name a few. Students will learn to research and design; how to properly plan and manage for group and individual projects; the safe and proper use of tools; and gain basic knowledge of the topics listed above. Remote/hybrid learning greatly affected the amount of projects students created this year, so there isn't near the amount of projects to share as there would be in a normal year.
Penny stoves were one of the simple projects that each block class was able to do, even while remote. There are various designs with the goal being who had the design that would bring water to boiling point the quickest and also burn the longest. After the testing the students use their stoves for how they were originally intended; they roast hotdogs, make mac-n-cheese, roast marshmallows, make s'mores.
Two of the three sections this year had a chance to construct toothpick towers using 250 toothpicks and Elmer's glue. They were then tested to see who's could withstand the pressure before breaking.
da Vinci Bridge
After completing their miniature da Vinci bridges, the class made a full-size version out of pine 2x4s and 1x1 pieces of poplar. da Vinci (friction) bridges are assembled without the use of any fasteners.
