Summer Assignment

This year's summer assignment is on ALEKS. I ask that you complete 15 topics a week, 120 for the summer. It is important to remember that the purpose of summer assignments is to consistently practice the skills that you have learned this year.

This summer more than ever, being home and distance learning, you are more susceptible to forgetting much of what you learned over the past few months. Two months is a long time to be out of school and you can easily forget all of the wonderful things that you have learned this year without practicing. And after all, practice makes perfect, especially when it comes to math. This year it is crucial that you practice to ensure next year’s success.

With this in mind, it is not recommended that you do your assignments in one or two sittings, but a little each day. I have created one assignment this year instead of separate ones. So it is up to you when you do them, however I will stress again, it is better that you spread them out. Of course, we know life can get busy. There are people to see, games to play, and vacations to take. But we want to try not to defeat the purpose of a summer assignment. Have fun and good luck.

February-

This month is all about linear equations.

We will learn that the solution set to a linear equation with two variables forms a line. We will learn to graph lines in different ways, understand the parts of a line (graphed and from a equation), and we will learn to write equations given certain specifics.

Next we will expand into systems of equations and take a look at inequalities in two variables.

January-

This month we will be learning about relations and functions.

Use inputs and outputs to distinguish functions from non-functions. Relate inputs and outputs to dependent and independent variables/ ordered pairs/ domain and range

Function rules

Describing functions as linear, non-linear, proportional or non-proportional

-Next topic linear equations

November-

This month we are focusing on our algebra skills:

Substitute and evaluate (Brush up on your order of operations!)

Solving equations- Up to 4 steps, Multiple occurrences of the variable on one side, Variable on opposite sides, and using Distibutive property. We will also be practicing to solve by first clearing fractions. We will learn to identify equations with one solution, no solutions and infinite many solutions.

We will review our translating words/skills and apply them to word problems, including problems with multiple variables.

We will follow up this topic with polynomials.

October-

We are practicing converting very large and very small numbers into scientific notation. We will then be adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing in scientific notation.

We will follow this by doing some work with right triangles... Pythagorean Theorem which has to do with the sides and then Trigonometry which has to do with the ratio of sides in relation to one of the angles.

We will finish out the month with Algebra.

Welcome back!!

This month we will be reviewing all of our basics.

Rational and Irrational Numbers, Number Groups, Order of Operations, Basic Properties, Decimals and Fractions.

While this is definitely basic for 8th Grade, we must be sure you know the basics before we can move on. You also have high school entrance exams coming up and this is the review you'll need to prepare.

We will be following this up with scientific notation.... Just another way to write and deal with numbers.
