Shedding light on the African American experience at Seton Hill University while celebrating those who helped to shape it

Black History is Everybody's History
Highlighting the experiences of African American communities sheds light on the footprints they left behind, as well as their work which contributed to the growth of the greater environment. Knowledge of their efforts and realities is essential to the institution moving forward and can hold us all accountable for the repetition of the past. Progress is everyone's goal, so observing previous successes, failures, and grey areas ensures that Seton Hill University is provided with the information to better itself for current and future African American students, faculty, and staff. It is essential that the doors for these conversations are opened, that we are all receptive, and that where necessary, changes are made to improve the experiences of all Seton Hill community members.Â
Ensuring that all students are given the opportunity to learn about themselves as well as those who advocated for their communities is essential to their personal development. For those outside of the Black community, having an understanding of the successes and contributions of African Americans outside of the notorious contexts of slavery and struggle coincides with the mission of Seton Hill University by creating critical, ethical, and culturally aware thinkers and leaders. Fostering an environment of true inclusivity skyrockets empathy among students and faculty, provides linkage and explanation to the issues of today, and prevents the dangers of undereducation and misinformation.
