8th to 9th Grade Transition
Getting Ready for High School
Students who attend South Eastern School District in 8th grade will transition into either Kennard-Dale High School or York County School of Technology for 9-12th grade.
From the start of 8th grade students will begin to discuss this transition process and will begin outlining goals and ideals for their secondary and post-secondary educational plans as the choices made in 8th grade lay the foundation for opportunities in the next four years. Whether your child chooses to be a KD Ram or a YCST Spartan, the School Counseling Department will help them chart the course for their High School experiences.
Please see the information below for details of the transition process.
Course Selection Process
Every Student at SEMS completes a course selection process, even if they would like to apply to attend YCST. This is a multi-step process that takes place both in and out of school and requires student, teacher, and parent/guardian involvement.
How does the process work?
Teachers will make course selections for the core classes (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies). They will identify the course and the level of the course for each subject. Levels include: Honors, College Preparatory, and Applied
Students will make selections for their electives. There is no guarantee students will get the electives they identified but the scheduling team will do their best to honor their preferences as best they can. All course descriptions can be found using the course catalogue for the 2024-2025 school year (linked above)
Once teachers and students have made their selections, the forms will be sent home for parents/guardians to sign in agreement. Note: If you do NOT agree with a teacher recommendation, please provide a handwritten note attached to the form or email the teacher to further discuss.
Once signed forms are returned, they will be sent to the KD scheduling team.
