UPMC Sports Medicine’s Fall Saturday Morning Injury Clinic
Through the athletic training contract between Serra and UPMC, our fall athletes (and sometimes others out of season) are entitled to go to a Saturday morning injury clinic at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine at 3200 South Water Street on Pittsburgh’s South Side (15203) or to the new Lemieux building in Cranberry.
1. The injury clinic is set up for acute injuries that happen at the end of the week, ideally Friday, so that an injured student does not have to wait until Monday/Tuesday to be seen by a sports medicine trained physician, sometimes eliminating the need to go to the ER.
2. The visit, including X-rays and other diagnostic studies (if wanted by the physician and if available), will be billed to your insurance, pending insurance cooperation with the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine.
3. Your student will be seen by a doctor or doctors trained specifically in sports medicine/orthopedics. A diagnosis will be given that day along with further steps to take care of the injury such as braces, prescriptions for further imaging studies, physical therapy/athletic training exercise programs, or a referral to a surgeon of your choice, if necessary. Concussion specialists are also available and on call. This is a great route to see them as appointments with concussion specialists are sometimes hard to come by in a quick fashion due to their extreme case loads.
4. Saturday morning injury clinic workers at the South Side office always contact Serra’s athletic trainer so that care can be clear and continuous and word can be passed along to coaches concerning conditions if warranted/wanted.
5. Students must arrive by 7:45 am to be seen. Visits are on a first come, first serve basis and athletes arriving after 8:00 am may not be able to be seen.
Also, do not forget....if you have any concern about an injury that occurs during a game, please see the athletic trainer then. It is easier to set things up that have already been evaluated. For football, we have a medical resident with the athletic trainer on the sidelines at all games.
