Kia ora koutou and welcome to the Understanding Agency workstream.
I'm Andrew Bergh and I work at Elim Golfland's Campus in the Middle Years as curriculum leader for English. This site serves the agency component of our combined workstreams which we've called Understanding Agency.
The workstream aims to help deepen our corporate understanding of learner agency across our Kāhui Ako. More specifically, we are looking at how to measure agency and how to boost it in our students.
In regard to fostering a shared understanding of agency as it relates to our schools we are developing a series of resources called the Understanding Agency Series. (This can be found these under the About this workstream page). Please feel free to use these for personal reading reading or as a foundation for professional learning. Each set of slides addresses an important aspect of agency and is accompanied by a reference list. Please find copies of the main articles in the reading list.
We are also developing our own Kahui Ako wide learner agency model to help measure and foster it. The purpose of the model is to provide a framework which represents the complexity of learner agency while at the same being simple enough to use effectively in our classrooms. When reading about and using the model, please regard it as a work in progress. The model is a starting point and should not be considered complete or all encompassing. Having said this, rather than start with our own opinions about agency or educational conjecture, we have based the model on current theory and peer reviewed literature (especially the work on Farrington et al., 2012).
Building on this foundation, we invite your input into developing the section on agentic teaching strategies which we refer to more specifically as agency boosters.
You will also notice that the model provides validated online surveys to measure aspects of our students' agency. These measures will be used by all WST collaborative inquiries in 2021 / 2022 so that we can measure the impact of our growing set of agency boosters.
