Our activities will be led by people who are authorised. This process ensures that activities which have inherent risk are delivered in a manner that reflects these operating procedures and the dynamic risk management that is required of outdoor practitioners.
The authorisation process will take into account qualification and experience and will include an induction that ensures familiarity with SEAS operating procedures, locations and equipment.
Anyone with an equivalent sign-off from the Conway Centre can be Authorised for that activity providing they have had a general SEAS induction and read these operating procedures.
All volunteers will be given a general induction into SEAS. This will include information about the goals and vision of SEAS, the ethos and code of conduct for volunteers, general health and safety policy and specific guidance on operating procedures for assistant roles.
There will be specific induction checklists for activities that must be completed before a volunteer may be authorised as an activity leader.
It is desirable for activity leaders to hold appropriate National Governing Body qualifications and for these to be up to date and current.
Copies will be taken and recorded.
Where qualifications are no longer current, the experience of the volunteer may be taken into consideration and/or additional up date training/monitoring provided.
This is a process that allows volunteers to become authorised activity leaders through observation and practice at SEAS sessions. It is specific to SEAS activity and may be given with restriction by factors such as venue, condition, equipment, participant number.
Volunteers operating with sign off will be encouraged to complete the appropriate NGB awards.
The length of the sign off process will depend upon the volunteer (do they possess other similar NGB qualifications, how much experience do they have?) but will always include an assessment by an approved person (see below). This assessment focuses on the specific skills needed for SEAS sessions and may not cover the full scope of the equivalent NGB qualification.
Authorisation is the final step in the process and is managed by the Operations Manager. Authorisations granted by previous Operations Managers will remain valid. Once authorised, volunteers will be regularly monitored and offered ongoing training to ensure their skills and knowledge remain up to date.
When authorisation is based on a SEAS sign-off, it may be limited in scope—for example, to specific locations, weather conditions, or types of craft. Sign-off can only be carried out by approved individuals and authorisation always requires final approval from the Operations Manager.
