TIC Weekly - Week 16

TIC Weekly will feature PFBC’s Trout In the Office (TIO) updates as they raise Rainbow Trout from eyed eggs to fingerlings.

Hello PA TIC participants!

In this week's TIO update video we are going to talk about how our Trout use sight. We discuss how a fish's eye works and how refraction plays a role in how fish might perceive an object. We also discuss how you might be able to use this knowledge to become a more efficient angler!

Observations

The TIO Trout are now almost exclusively feeding on the size #2 food. To our knowledge, we have not experienced any cannibalisms recently. Most of our fish are large enough to avoid predation from our largest Rainbow however, we can't rule out the possibility yet!

PFBC’s Trout In the Office Eggs arrived on September 25, 2020!

Water Quality Parameters

Temp - 55°F pH - 8.2 Ammonia - 0 ppm

Nitrites -0 ppm Nitrates -40 ppm DO - 10.9

All of our water quality parameter are in check. Our fish have become very agile and aggressive feeders. We have noticed that they are extremely efficient in not letting any food reach the bottom. At this stage it is important to not over feed. If you ever notice food reaching the bottom it is a good idea to cut back on the amount of food.

Life Stage Facts

Our Rainbow Trout rely heavily upon sight! How a fish perceives the outside world can mean the difference between finding food or becoming food! Check out this week's update video to learn more about how fish see!
