TIC Weekly - Week 15

TIC Weekly will feature PFBC’s Trout In the Office (TIO) updates as they raise Rainbow Trout from eyed eggs to fingerlings.

Hello PA TIC participants!

In this week's newsletter we will provide you with an update for our Trout in the Office aquarium. The Trout continue to grow at an impressive rate! Make sure to check out the update video below. This week we go further into one of the many important water quality parameters when it comes to your aquarium and in the environment as well! Stay tuned as we will have more virtual field trips coming soon!

Observations

In this week's video, the TIO Trout are eager to feed. Notice how the fish immediately dart towards the surface when the foam cover is removed. These fish have learned that when this happens there is potentially some food on the way.

There is still one very large Trout that stands out when compared to the others. All of the fish are now growing to an impressive size given that they were in the egg stage just 15 weeks ago! We will soon be feeding them the size #2 food.

PFBC’s Trout In the Office Eggs arrived on September 25, 2020!

Water Quality Parameters

Temp - 55°F pH - 8.2 Ammonia - 0 ppm

Nitrites -0 ppm Nitrates -40 ppm DO - 10.9

Our water quality parameters are all looking great. Scheduling and completing a weekly partial water change is helping to keep our nitrates in check. In this week's update video we go further into detail concerning dissolved oxygen. We discuss what it is and how we ensure to keep that parameter at levels where our Trout will continue to thrive. We also talk about how dissolved oxygen levels can fluctuate in different systems.

Life Stage Facts

Even though the TIO Trout are now bigger and more active, it is important to remember that they are still very vulnerable at this stage. Changes in habitat and water quality can still have negative impacts for Rainbow Trout and other aquatic organisms. Water quality is equally as important now as when it was when these fish were in the egg stage.
