Core and Associated Faculty

Dr Allen Gontz

Dr Gontz is the founder of the Lab. He is a Quaternary Geologist and Geomorphologist who uses shallow earth geophyscial techniques to understand how landscapes evolve over various temporal and spatial scales in response to climate and anthropogenic forcings.

Dr Thomas Rockwell

Dr Rockwell is a palaeoseismologist. He uses techniques of sedimentology, stratigraphy, tectonics and geochemical dating methods to understand historic and prehistoric activity on faults around the world. He is keenly focused on systems that have been active in the Holocene and how fault activity is represented in the archaeological and historic records.

Currently Active Students

Michael Levenson, MS Student

Mike started with the lab in 2018. His research uses ground penetrating radar to unravel the sequence of aeolian landforms and how the periods of aeolian activity relate to mega drought cycles. His field area is in the White River Badlands of South Dakota. His work is highlighted in AEOLIAN RESEARCH

Sarina Mazzone, MS Student

Sarina started with the Lab in 2019 after completing an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science at SDSU. Her work uses ground penetrating radar to examine lake level changes and correlating the geophysical signatures to sediment cores. Her field area is Brown Lake on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. Her work is highlighted in LAKE and WETLANDS

William Buckley, MS Student

William joined the lab for the Fall 2020 semester. He comes to SDSU with a BS in Geology from CSU-SB and after spending nearly 5 years working as a geotechnical specialist for a firm in southern California. William has interests in earthquake dynamics, geophysics and geomorphology. He is working hard to identify his project.

Amber Warden, BS Student, Geology

Amber joined the lab in Fall 2020 to work on her senior thesis in Geology. Her interests are in hydrology and links between water and climate. For her research, she will be using GPR data collected on North Stradbroke Island to bring some stratigraphic context to the perched aquifer systems of the island. Amber expects to complete her BS in Geology in December 2021.

Previous Students

Joshua T Kelly - PhD 2020

Josh started with the Lab in 2015 while in Boston, MA. His research has focused on using remote sensing to relate climate variability and drivers to the response of coastal systems. He has used satellite imagery from LandSAT and Planet Labs. His work is highlighted in SHORELINE CHANGE. After completing his PhD in May 2020, Dr Kelly was offered a tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Coastal Geology at the California State University at Los Angeles.

Daniel Ellerton, PhD 2020 (UQ)

Dan was a PhD student at the Unvieristy of Queensland supervised by Dr James Shulmeister, His dissertation work was on the geomorphic mapping of, evolutionary history and timing of the Cooloola Sand Mass, southeastern Queensland, Australia. He used optically stimulated luminescence dating, sedimentology, soils and ground penetrating radar. Dan is currently seeking his next great adventure as a postdoc. His work is highlighted in DUNES

Eleanor Carrano, MS 2020

Ellie started with the Lab in 2017. Her research uses ground penetrating radar to investigate the response of sand dunes in southeastern California to changes in wind regimes. Her work is highlighted in AEOLIAN RESEARCH

Chelsea Blanton, MS 2019

Chelsea was an MS student with SDSU co-supervised by Drs Thomas Rockwell and Allen Gontz. Her work used very high resolution UAV imagery to map offset rill and stream features along the southern section of the San Andreas Fault. This led to a new understanding the capacity to use major episodic climate events to "time stamp" creep and asiesmic movement. Chelsea is now employed by as a geotechincal specialist. Her work is highlighted in FAULTS
