Students have choice when art-making. Imagery, compositional organization, and choice of materials is encouraged to personalize the experience. Art class at McCracken can be described as a semi-TAB classoom (TAB = Teaching Artistic Behaviors).
Projects continually evolve and vary from class to class dependent upon pacing and student interest/input. Scroll down to see a sampling of projects that have been presented.
For your final project, you will use the skills and knowledge you have developed in art. Follow these steps to success...
Watch the 3D Lettering Presentation video.
Reflect and revise your planning work (completed previously - see previous Unit 5 directions).
Seek advice with a post to the 3D Lettering Feedback document (not required for final project)
Complete a wonderful, original work of art using your best craftsmanship and creativity.
5. Post a photo of your final project in Artsonia, (7th Grade 3D Lettering folder) and add an artist statement to describe your process and artwork using visual art vocabulary and concepts learned during the unit.
Contact Mr Mac if you have any questions.
Choose a word (for example: a motivational word, or a name)
View the 3D lettering tutorial video
Create a sketch of your word using One-Point linear Perspective
Share the sketch for feedback in the 3D Lettering Feedback Document
or peruse the presentation at your own pace by opening Linear Perspective Introduction
Eliminate unproductive white space. This means you are coloring or shading (solid fill, pattern or additional imagery) in the negative space (background).
Practice Quality Craftsmanship . Take time and put forth effort to produce your best work.
Remember: you are creating artwork to celebrate a Keepsake item. Therefore, your artwork should depict that item using your best artistic skills (i,e, quality craftsmanship); and should tell a story of your Keepsake (like the moment it became important to you - shown in additional imagery or with text added to the artwork). Also, take time to consider what you will add to negative space - color, design, imagery? You are expected to eliminate unpurposeful white space in your artwork.
Required: You are required to provide feedback to the person who posted before and the person who posted after you. You may provide feedback to any other classmate after completing the required task. When providing feedback:
give a compliment - describe something you like about their artwork
give constructive feedback - offer a suggestion to improve
Improve your ideas
Improve your composition
Improve your skills and quality craftsmanship
Sketch - create sketches to explore compositional options for your artwork
Experiment - with different styles. Choose the style that works for you
Finalize plans and creative ideas - add notation if you need to explain anything
Draw your Keepsake in a realistic style, adding to and eliminating white space in the background
Arrange your Keepsake with other items to draw a still life in any style - realistic, impressionistic, surrealistic
Simplify your Keepsake to it's silhouette - add colorful patterns and designs in the negative space
Repeat the image - create design through repetition - color with your choice of color scheme
Write a story about your Keepsake, add imagery to the story
Notice the handle of the cup in this drawing. Notice how we see the outside part of the handle near the upper connection, and the inside of the handle near the lower connection. Strive to show this "flip".
This drawing shows what the artist sees in reflections on the cup's surface. Strive to depict the reflections you see.
Multiple items arranged together can make an interesting composition. You can choose items that are important, meaningful, or simply beautiful to you. This example also shows the addition of color.
Potential objects include anything with interesting form:
trophies; a stuffed animal; a sculpture; a figurine; a baseball glove; shoes, coffee cups; your hand; a sewing machine; a lamp; a bottle; a pair of scissors; folded/crumpled paper; etc...
Things to avoid: things that are flat, such as cell phones
Things that create a theme. For example, a basketball, basketball shoes and a basketball jersey or trophy.
Keep previous contour line work in mind - artists imagine contour lines when creating the illusion of form with shading
Create these forms: sphere, cone, cylinder, cube
Study the more complex contour line drawings of an apple, a banana, a hand, and shoes in the handout
The image you see to the left is drawn on a flat piece of paper, and this unit will help you understand how to create that illusion - the illusion of form. To begin, we will start with a lesson - learning about contour lines.
When drawing use a piece of unlined paper, if possible.
You may complete multiple tasks on one piece of paper
Complete Task 5 on a seperate sheet of paper - developing this attempt into a wonderful, original work of art
Try to identify the artist before you get to slide #6.
Look at the work of art on Slide 8, it is called "Guernica"
Go to classroom.google and tell us what you think Guernica is about...
7th grade class code: z72gvbb
Give your opinion about the artwork "Guernica".
Comment on your classmate's opinions
Over the past week, we created an Imaginary Friend, and did so using the artistic process every artist applies when artmaking. One can identify six steps in the artistic process...
Your task:
review the steps you completed during the Imaginary Friend unit
create a google doc entitled What Do Artists Do?
In this document, list the six steps of the artistic process
view What Do Artists Do? presentation
click the screen to reveal one step of the artistic process
repeat until you see the six steps of the artistic process
Compare this list with the list you made, correct your list if necessary
Brainstorm and record specific tasks that an artist might use during each step. Here is a hand-written example of this assignment
Share your completed google doc with Mr Mac for credit
set 'share setting' to allow comments
Consider the Elements of Art such as shape (flat, 2D) , form (value/shading/3D illusion), and color
Consider textures
Develop a story for your Imaginary Friend - depict action and a scene from that story, or create a cartoon
Draw your imaginary friend again, working to improve quality craftsmanship
Fill the white space in your artwork - consider negative space - what will be added and visible in the area that is not your Imaginary Friend
What is your imaginary friend holding? wearing?
Who is with your imaginary friend?
See the 4/3 version of "Friday Fun" (scroll down)
If you created a sketch last Friday, you will write a description today.
If you wrote a description last Friday, you will draw a sketch today.
The JooYoung Choi video has 'Art Assignment' directions that you may follow... here is a print version of directions for "Imaginary Friend"
1) Watch this Video about artist JooYoung Choi
2) Choose one of the following activities:
WRITE about YOUR IMAGINARY FRIEND - create your description in a google doc and share it with Mr Mac
CREATE YOUR IMAGINARY FRIEND - draw, paint, sculpt, create your own imaginary friend. Take a photo of that work and post to Artsonia.com
BOTH - WRITE about and CREATE YOUR IMAGINARY FRIEND
This will be a "one-day" unit. We will call it "Unit 1". This is our warm up to elearning. It will give you practice using the technology and will help us identify any problems.
Final work is due Thursday 4/2 at 3pm.
You will be graded on the following standards:
Planning
Creating
Reflecting/Revising
Presenting
Responding
Task Completion
1) Planning - Go to https://www.justcolor.net/ You will meet the planning standard by selecting an image
2) Creating - If you don't have a printer, read * below. If you do have a printer, select image and print. Color your selection** Focus on quality craftsmanship
3) Reflect/Revise - when you finish coloring, look at what you have done. Ask yourself what can be improved, or what needs to be changed. If you would like feedback from Mr Mac, post a photo of your work to Artsonia in "Mid-Unit Feedback" folder
4) Presenting - Complete artwork. Meet the deadline. Post a photo of your work to Artsonia in "Projects (Completed Work)" folder - Due Thurs, April 2 at 3pm
5) Responding - Write an artist statement telling us about the process and your work, including what you did to achieve quality craftsmanship
*if you are unable to print documents at home, place paper on top of screen and use a pencil to lightly trace the image.
**if you don't have color pencils, markers or crayons at home, use a pencil or pen
Finally, if tracing a design doesn't seem logical to you, you may create your own design. The learning is focused on shape and quality craftsmanship. Strive to develop something that demonstrates understanding of those concepts.
