May 12 - Complete Keepsake Artwork.

1) Reflect on feedback provided previously

2) Revise and improve your drawing

  • Eliminate unproductive white space. This means you are coloring or shading (solid fill, pattern or additional imagery) in the negative space (background).
  • Practice Quality Craftsmanship . Take time and put forth effort to produce your best work.

3) Post a photo of your work in Artsonia.com (place in the "7th grade Drawings" folder)

May 8 and May 11 - Keepsake Artwork: Provide feedback for your classmates; Reflect on Feedback; Revise and Improve your imagery, design and ideas...

Remember: you are creating artwork to celebrate a Keepsake item. Therefore, your artwork should depict that item using your best artistic skills (i,e, quality craftsmanship); and should tell a story of your Keepsake (like the moment it became important to you - shown in additional imagery or with text added to the artwork). Also, take time to consider what you will add to negative space - color, design, imagery? You are expected to eliminate unpurposeful white space in your artwork.

1) Go to the Keepsake Feedback document, and provide feedback for your classmates

Required: You are required to provide feedback to the person who posted before and the person who posted after you. You may provide feedback to any other classmate after completing the required task. When providing feedback:

  • give a compliment - describe something you like about their artwork
  • give constructive feedback - offer a suggestion to improve

2) Review feedback provided for you ~ and given to others (you can use feedback given to others to improve your work); Reflect on feedback and consider ways you can improve your artwork

3) Continue working to improve your artwork:

  • Improve your ideas
  • Improve your composition
  • Improve your skills and quality craftsmanship

May 6/7 - Finish Planning for "Keepsake" Artwork

2) Develop your ideas for Keepsake artwork:

  • Sketch - create sketches to explore compositional options for your artwork
  • Experiment - with different styles. Choose the style that works for you
  • Finalize plans and creative ideas - add notation if you need to explain anything

3) Share your ideas with a post on Keepsake Feedback document - this document does not have to be a completed work of art; the intent of this post is to share and seek feedback from others so you can revise and improve a work of art in progress

May 6 - Attend our google.meets class meeting at 10:30am

May 5 - Unit 4 Planning - Develop Ideas for "Keepsake" Artwork

There are many styles and techniques artists use to create artwork based upon a theme. Today you will begin planning artwork with the theme "Keepsake"

1) Sketch ideas for your artwork

Here are some methods you can explore as you develop your ideas...

  • Draw your Keepsake in a realistic style, adding to and eliminating white space in the background
  • Arrange your Keepsake with other items to draw a still life in any style - realistic, impressionistic, surrealistic
  • Simplify your Keepsake to it's silhouette - add colorful patterns and designs in the negative space
  • Repeat the image - create design through repetition - color with your choice of color scheme
  • Write a story about your Keepsake, add imagery to the story

2) Note: 7th Grade Google.Meets for Art Class will occur Wednesday at 10am. We will discuss these options - and hear your original ideas - at that time.

May 4 - Choose a Keepsake item to use as a source for Unit 4

A Keepsake is an item you cherish. It is not easily replaced, and may be one-of-a-kind.

A Keepsake is special, it likely celebrates a special memory, or is in honor of something, someone, or recognizes an achievement.

Take a photo of your Keepsake, Save to Drive, share with Mr Mac

April 30/ May 1 - Reflect on feedback; Revise your work; Present - share artwork online and write an artist statement.

1) Review and reflect upon feedback provided in Shading Feedback and Artsonia

2) Revise and improve your work. Focus on creating core and cast shadows as you eliminate the initial outline of the objects you are drawing. Practice - demonstrate persistence developing skills. Show quality craftsmanship in your work.

3) Post (or re-post) a photo of the final version of your Still Life drawing to Artsonia. Place these posts in the "7th Grade Drawings" folder

4) Write an artist statement using the writing prompts you see in Artsonia

Handle

Notice the handle of the cup in this drawing. Notice how we see the outside part of the handle near the upper connection, and the inside of the handle near the lower connection. Strive to show this "flip".

Reflection

This drawing shows what the artist sees in reflections on the cup's surface. Strive to depict the reflections you see.

Multiple Items

Multiple items arranged together can make an interesting composition. You can choose items that are important, meaningful, or simply beautiful to you. This example also shows the addition of color.

April 28-29 - Still Life Drawing

Task: Use shading to create the illusion of form with multiple and/or complex objects.

1) Look at the Still Life imagery in the images in the photos above this post. Study the core and cast shadows, and the attention that was given to negative space. Notice that the artists reproduced the reflections that were visible on the object's surface

2) Find objects in your home, search for things that are meaningful to you, or common objects that have interesting form (groups of three things usually work well together). Place them together on a table - shine a desk light at the object(s) to increase the value range

Potential objects include anything with interesting form:

  • trophies; a stuffed animal; a sculpture; a figurine; a baseball glove; shoes, coffee cups; your hand; a sewing machine; a lamp; a bottle; a pair of scissors; folded/crumpled paper; etc...
  • Things to avoid: things that are flat, such as cell phones
  • Things that create a theme. For example, a basketball, basketball shoes and a basketball jersey or trophy.

3) Use the shading technique to reproduce the values you see. Pay attention to core shadows, cast shadows, reflective light and negative space.

4) When you are finished with your Still Life Drawing, post it to Artsonia.com - 7th Grade Drawings folder

April 27 - Value - Create the Illusion of Form with Shading Technique

1) View Shading - Creating the Illusion of Form video tutorial on Youtube.

2) Practice creating the illusion of form using a shading technique

  • Keep previous contour line work in mind - artists imagine contour lines when creating the illusion of form with shading
  • Create these forms: sphere, cone, cylinder, cube

3) Post results to Shading Feedback (be sure to add your name to your slide & artwork)

April 24 - View and comment on the artwork posted by classmates

1) Upload a photo of your contour line drawings work to Contour Lines Feedback

2) Comment on artwork posted by your classmates

    • Provide two comments for the person who posted before you, and two comments for the person who posts after you:
      • for each classmate, provide one compliment; and one suggestion to improve their work
      • add additional comments to other students as desired
      • go to Contour Lines Feedback to complete this assignment

3) Check your Contour Line Drawing post for comments/feedback provided for you.

April 23/24 - Contour Lines Drawing - object(s)

1) Review complex objects in Contour Lines handout.

    • Study the more complex contour line drawings of an apple, a banana, a hand, and shoes in the handout

2) Choose a 'complex' object, or a set of objects from your home or from your imagination

3) Create a contour line drawing of the object(s) you chose.

4) Post a photo of your work in Contour Lines Feedback

5) Comment on artwork posted by your classmates; check back for feedback

Unit 3 - Illusion of Form

The image you see to the left is drawn on a flat piece of paper, and this unit will help you understand how to create that illusion - the illusion of form. To begin, we will start with a lesson - learning about contour lines.

April 22 - Contour Lines

1) Review Contour Lines handout.

2) Draw objects using contour lines: Complete the tasks described on page 3 of Contour Lines handout

  • When drawing use a piece of unlined paper, if possible.
  • You may complete multiple tasks on one piece of paper
  • Complete Task 5 on a seperate sheet of paper - developing this attempt into a wonderful, original work of art

3) Take a photo of your contour line drawings; insert this photo into Contour Lines Feedback

4) Comment on your classmate's artwork; check for feedback.
