May 29-June 3. Unit 5: Still Life - Illusion of Form Creative Finale (Final Project)

For your final project, you will use the skills and knowledge you have developed in art. Follow these steps to success...

  1. Watch the Still Life Presentation video. (May 29)
  2. Plan a still life and create initial drawings to determine the arrangement of still life objects, and style. (May 29)
  3. Seek advice with a post to the Still Life Feedback document (not required for final project) (June 1)
  4. Complete a wonderful, original work of art using your best craftsmanship and creativity. (June 3)

Your final work is due Wednesday, June 3rd

5. Post a photo of your final project in Artsonia, (into the "6th Grade Still Life Drawings" folder) and add an artist statement to describe your process and artwork using visual art vocabulary and concepts learned during the unit.

As always, you are being evaluated on your planning, creating, reflecting, revising, presenting and responding to art.

May 28 - Unit 5: Illusion of Form - Contour lines and Shading.

1) Continue practice: create the illusion of form using contour lines and/or shading. Create multiple drawings for practice.

2) Develop ideas: find objects around your home that are meaningful and/or have interesting form.

3) Experiment with placement of objects to create a "still life". Practice drawing them. Or, take photos of "accidental still life" ~ a grouping of things that just happened to be together in your home ~ to use as a drawing guide


May 27 - Unit 5: 3D Lettering - Reflect and Revise work

1) Review feedback given in the Shading Feedback document.

2) Read the feedback given to others (and give feedback to classmates).

3) Reflect on feedback, and use it to revise and improve your work.

4) Post any revisions with a second photograph inserted into your slide on the Shading Feedback document.


May 26 - Illusion of Form - Shading

In this lesson, you will practice creating the illusion of form. For our activity, you will turn shapes into forms with shading:

  • circle = sphere
  • square = cube
  • rectangle = cylinder
  • triangle = cone and/or pyramid

2) Practice creating the illusion of form using a shading technique

  • Start with a LIGHT outline of each shape (circle, square,
  • Identify light source - where is the light coming from in your drawing?
  • Keep previous contour line work in mind - artists imagine contour lines when creating the illusion of form with shading
  • Eliminate the outline of your shape with shading.
  • Create a core shadow, highlight, midtone, and cast shadow to create the illusion of a sphere, cone, cylinder, and cube.

3) Post results to Shading Feedback (be sure to add your name to your slide & artwork)


May 21/22 - Contour Lines Drawing - complex object(s)

1) Review complex objects in Contour Lines handout.

    • Study the more complex contour line drawings of an apple, a banana, a hand, and shoes in the handout

2) Choose a 'complex' object, or a set of objects from your home or from your imagination

3) Create a contour line drawing of the object(s) you chose.

4) Post a photo of your work in Contour Lines Feedback

5) Comment on artwork posted by your classmates; check back for feedback

May 19/20 - Unit 5 - Creating the Illusion of Form Introduction: Contour Lines

The image you see to the left is drawn on a flat piece of paper, and this unit will help you understand how to create that illusion - the illusion of form. To begin, we will start with a lesson - learning about contour lines.

April 22 - Contour Lines

1) Review Contour Lines handout.

2) Draw objects using contour lines: Complete the tasks described on page 3 of Contour Lines handout

  • When drawing use a piece of unlined paper, if possible.
  • You may complete multiple tasks on one piece of paper
  • Complete Task 5 on a seperate sheet of paper - developing this attempt into a wonderful, original work of art

3) Take a photo of your contour line drawings; insert this photo into Contour Lines Feedback

4) Comment on your classmate's artwork; check for feedback.


May 18 - Check Artsonia and Power School; Revise and Improve previously assigned work.

This is a "catch up" day. As of 5pm on Sunday, May 17, all grading and feedback was completed and posted. Today you should:

1) Check Artsonia for feedback. Reflect and revise work as suggested.

2) Check Power School grade program for incomplete and/or missing work. Finish incomplete work. Choose to complete missing assignments, starting with "Respond to Art: Mood"

3) 'Extend' your learning by completing more artwork. Create additional works of art based upon previous assignments, or your own experiences.

May 14 - Respond to Art: Mood

During our class meeting on May 13, we discussed 'mood' in artwork. Those who joined us have completed this assignment. If you were unable to join us during the class meeting, complete the following tasks:

May 12 - Unit 4 - Complete Negative Space Artwork

1) Reflect on feedback provided previously via Negative Space feedback Document, and/or in Artsonia.com

2) Revise and improve your drawing and artist statement

  • Use feedback to revise and improve your artwork and artist statement - Check Artsonia for feedback.
  • Eliminate white area in negative space. This means you are coloring or shading (solid fill, pattern or additional imagery) in the negative space (background).
  • Practice Quality Craftsmanship . Take time and put forth effort to produce your best work.

3) Post a photo of your revised work in Artsonia.com (place in "6th Grade Positive/Negative Space" folder), and use feedback to edit your artist statement

May 11 - Share artwork for feedback

May 7/8 - Reflect and Revise Artwork

1) Review feedback provided in Negative Space feedback document

2) Reflect on feedback and use it to revise and improve your work

  • You may continue working on the work you started, or begin a new version of your work

3) Post a photo of your work to Artsonia.com, (post to "6th Grade Positive/Negative Space" folder)

4) Also in Artsonia, write an artist statement using visual art vocabulary to describe the concepts you learned and used to create the artwork.


May 5 and 6 - Planning/Creating - Negative Space Artwork

2) Plan and create artwork - Shade, color and/or create designs in Negative Space so that a recognizable image appears without touching Positive Space with you pencil (marker, or paint brush) - see presentation slides 17-22 for examples.

3) Share artwork with Mr MacBeth by posting a photo of your work to the Negative Space feedback document. Deadline: Wednesday May 6 at 3pm

4) View the "Art Assignment" video given by artist Jonathan Nesci, and choose to complete his Presenter Perimeter challenge. If you complete his challenge, post a photo of your artwork in Artsonia - placing your photo into the "Your Extends Artwork" folder.


April 29 - Add an Artist Statement for you Shape Design

April 27-28: Reflect/Revise your Shape Design

Create a new version of your design that you will color

1) Reflect on feedback received from your classmates and Mr Mac

2) Revise artwork - focus on shapes and balance - color your best work

  • shapes: should be flat, and colored using quality coloring techniques - even consistent coloring
  • balance: the design should feel evenly weighted side-to-side - this includes shapes and color choices

3) When you have finished your Shape Design, post a photo of it in Artsonia.com - Shape Designs folder

April 24 - View and comment on artwork created by classmates

1) Upload a photo of your Shape Design to Shape Design Feedback

2) Comment on artwork posted by your classmates

    • Provide two comments for the person who posted before you, and two comments for the person who posts after you:
      • for each classmate, provide one compliment; and one suggestion to improve their work
      • add additional comments to other students as desired
      • go to Shape Design Feedback to complete this assignment

3) Check your Shape Design post for comments/feedback provided for you.

April 23/24 - Unit 3 - Shape - Creating with Shapes

Plan and create an abstract design focused on shape:

  • When drawing use a piece of unlined paper, if possible.
  • Sketch: use light pencil marks to develop your design - be open to creating several options/ideas before you start coloring
  • Choose a color scheme and add color to your artwork (you may also work in black/white). When coloring, practice quality craftsmanship

3) Take a photo of your Shape Design Drawing; insert this photo into the Shape Design Feedback

4) Comment on your classmate's artwork; check for feedback.

April 22 - Respond to Art: Mini-Masterpiece


Mr Mac uploaded a photo of your Mini-Masterpiece, which is the intuitive artwork we created during the first week of Term 3.

Today, you will revisit that work in Artsonia.com - add a title and artist statement.

  1. Go to Artsonia.com
  2. Enter the access code: RMSH-RHCZ
  3. Enter your first name and PIN
  4. Add a title and artist statement to your Mini-Masterpiece

Some of the visual art vocabulary words I will be looking for in your statement include: intuitive drawing; composition; the 'rule of thirds'; shape and quality craftsmanship.


April 20 - Who is the Artist?

Learn something new about a very famous artist.

Try to identify the artist before you get to Slide #6!

  • Try to identify the artist before you get to slide #6.
  • Look at the work of art on Slide 8, it is called "Guernica"
  • Go to classroom.google and tell us what you think Guernica is about...

2) Go to your classroom.google page:

  • Comment on your classmate's opinions

April 16 - What Do Artist Do?

    • Over the past week, we created an Imaginary Friend, and did so using the artistic process every artist applies when artmaking. One can identify six steps in the artistic process...

Your task:

  1. review the steps you completed during the Imaginary Friend unit
  2. create a google doc entitled What Do Artists Do?
    • In this document, list the six steps of the artistic process
  3. view What Do Artists Do? presentation
    • click the screen to reveal one step of the artistic process
    • repeat until you see the six steps of the artistic process
  4. Compare this list with the list you made, correct your list if necessary
  5. Brainstorm and record specific tasks that an artist might use during each step. Here is a hand-written example of this assignment
  6. Share your completed google doc with Mr Mac for credit

April 15 - Imaginary Friend Artist Statement


Write an artist statement about your 'Imaginary Friend' artwork. Include:

  • The materials and techniques you used to create the artwork, written using complete sentences and visual art vocabulary (name the elements, principles, materials and techniques)
  • The characteristics or story of your Imaginary Friend (describe the ideas or concepts in your artwork)
  • Edits (your posted artist statement should be the final version after review and edits are complete)

April 10 - Imaginary Friend - Reflect, Refine, Improve


Mr Mac will be adding feedback to the Imaginary Friend Slides presentation

Today you should:

1) Confirm that you have made two comments for the person who posted before you, and two comments for the person who posted after you.

~ one comment about what you like (for acknowledging hard work)

~ one comment about what you would like to see (for improvement)

~ two comments on two slides = 4 comments total (minimum)

2) Begin reflecting upon the feedback that you have been given, and developing ideas about how you can improve your work. Sketching tutorial

**Suggestions to improve artwork (look for individual suggestions on your slide in the Imaginary Friend Slides presentation:

  • Consider the Elements of Art such as shape (flat, 2D) , form (value/shading/3D illusion), and color
  • Consider textures
  • Develop a story for your Imaginary Friend - depict action and a scene from that story, or create a cartoon
  • Draw your imaginary friend again, working to improve quality craftsmanship
  • Fill the white space in your artwork - consider negative space - what will be added and visible in the area that is not your Imaginary Friend
  • What is your imaginary friend holding? wearing?
  • Who is with your imaginary friend?

**Suggestions to improve artwork are not limitations ~ be CREATIVE!

April 9 - Imaginary Friend - Reflect, Respond


For today's art assignment,

1) post artwork and description of your Imaginary Friend (if not yet done)

2) make sure you have provided feedback to your classmates' posts in the Imaginary Friends google.slides presentation:

Required: comment on the person who posted right before you; and the person who posted right after you. (1 comment for each sentence starter = 2 comments per post; w comments on 2 classmates' posts = 4 comments total)

Optional: comment on any classmate's post - 2 comments per slide, no limit

*Remember to highlight sentence starter when commenting. highlight text > right click > comment - add your feedback to comment box

April 8 - Imaginary Friend - Present; Reflect; Respond

April 7 - Imaginary Friend - Planning / Creating

Many students have completed their "Imaginary Friend" sketch and description. You may extend your skills and creativity today by adding to either:

1) Draw a close-up version of your Imaginary Friend, or a different pose or view of your Imaginary Friend's whole body. Color your work.

2) Add to the description - check that the description matches the image.

On Wednesday, you will upload photo(s) and the description of your Imaginary Friend to a Google slide that Mr Mac will share with you later. You will also give and receive feedback to/from classmates.

Unit 2 - Imaginary Friend

Introducing the talented and amazing JooYoung Choi, who shares her fictional realm "The Cosmic Womb" and beckons us to create our own IMAGINARY FRIEND.

Hi Everyone. Welcome to day one of E-Learning!

Unit 1: Coloring

This will be a "one-day" unit. We will call it "Unit 1". This is our warm up to elearning. It will give you practice using the technology and will help us identify any problems.

Final work is due Thursday 4/2 at 3pm.

You will be evaluated on the following standards:

  • Planning
  • Creating
  • Reflecting/Revising
  • Presenting
  • Responding
  • Task Completion

Unit 1 - Coloring - Directions:

1) Planning - Go to https://www.justcolor.net/ You will meet the planning standard by selecting an image

2) Creating - If you don't have a printer, read * below. If you do have a printer, select image and print. Color your selection** Focus on quality craftsmanship

3) Reflect/Revise - when you finish coloring, look at what you have done. Ask yourself what can be improved, or what needs to be changed. If you would like feedback from Mr Mac, post a photo of your work to Artsonia in "Mid-Unit Feedback" folder

4) Presenting - Complete artwork. Meet the deadline. Post a photo of your work to Artsonia in "Projects (Completed Work)" folder - Due Thurs, April 2 at 3pm

5) Responding - Write an artist statement telling us about the process and your work, including what you did to achieve quality craftsmanship


*if you are unable to print documents at home, place paper on top of screen and use a pencil to lightly trace the image.

**if you don't have color pencils, markers or crayons at home, use a pencil or pen

Finally, if tracing a design doesn't seem logical to you, you may create your own design. The learning is focused on shape and quality craftsmanship. Strive to develop something that demonstrates understanding of those concepts.

This assignment should take <60 minutes.
