Students have choice when art-making, including imagery, and compositional organization to personalize the experience.
Art class at McCracken can be described as a semi-TAB classoom (TAB = Teaching Artistic Behaviors).
Projects continually evolve and vary from class to class dependent upon pacing and student interest/input. Scroll down to see a sampling of projects that have been presented.
For your final project, you will use the skills and knowledge you have developed in art. Follow these steps to success...
Watch the Still Life Presentation video.
Plan a still life and create initial drawings to determine the arrangement of still life objects, and style.
Seek advice with a post to the Still Life Feedback document (not required for final project)
Complete a wonderful, original work of art using your best craftsmanship and creativity.
5. Post a photo of your final project in Artsonia and add an artist statement to describe your process and artwork using visual art vocabulary and concepts learned during the unit.
Contact Mr Mac if you have any questions.
In this lesson, you will practice creating the illusion of form. For our activity, you will turn shapes into forms with shading:
circle = sphere
square = cube
rectangle = cylinder
triangle = cone and/or pyramid
Start with a LIGHT outline of each shape (circle, square,
Identify light source - where is the light coming from in your drawing?
Keep previous contour line work in mind - artists imagine contour lines when creating the illusion of form with shading
Eliminate the outline of your shape with shading.
Create a core shadow, highlight, midtone, and cast shadow to create the illusion of a sphere, cone, cylinder, and cube.
Study the more complex contour line drawings of an apple, a banana, a hand, and shoes in the handout
The image you see to the left is drawn on a flat piece of paper, and this unit will help you understand how to create that illusion - the illusion of form. To begin, we will start with a lesson - learning about contour lines.
When drawing use a piece of unlined paper, if possible.
You may complete multiple tasks on one piece of paper
Complete Task 5 on a seperate sheet of paper - developing this attempt into a wonderful, original work of art
Use feedback to revise and improve your artwork and artist statement - Check Artsonia for feedback.
Eliminate white area in negative space. This means you are coloring or shading (solid fill, pattern or additional imagery) in the negative space (background).
Practice Quality Craftsmanship . Take time and put forth effort to produce your best work.
Practice Quality Craftsmanship and Creativity
You may continue working on the work you started, or begin a new version of your work
Printing handout is not required - you may complete your work on a seperate paper - used unlined paper if you have it.
shapes: should be flat, and colored using quality coloring techniques - even consistent coloring
balance: the design should feel evenly weighted side-to-side - this includes shapes and color choices
When drawing use a piece of unlined paper, if possible.
Sketch: use light pencil marks to develop your design - be open to creating several options/ideas before you start coloring
Choose a color scheme and add color to your artwork (you may also work in black/white). When coloring, practice quality craftsmanship

Over the past week, we created an Imaginary Friend, and did so using the artistic process every artist applies when artmaking. One can identify six steps in the artistic process...
Your task:
review the steps you completed during the Imaginary Friend unit
create a google doc entitled What Do Artists Do?
In this document, list the six steps of the artistic process
view What Do Artists Do? presentation
click the screen to reveal one step of the artistic process
repeat until you see the six steps of the artistic process
Compare this list with the list you made, correct your list if necessary
Brainstorm and record specific tasks that an artist might use during each step. Here is a hand-written example of this assignment
Share your completed google doc with Mr Mac for credit

This is a warm up for our class. It will give you practice developing fine-motor skills and practicing quality craftsmanship. You will also use the technology that will be required throughout the class.
You will be evaluated on the following standards:
Planning
Creating
Reflecting/Revising
Presenting
Responding
Task Completion
1) Planning - Go to https://www.justcolor.net/ You will meet the planning standard by selecting an image
2) Creating - If you don't have a printer, read * below. If you do have a printer, select image and print. Color your selection** Focus on quality craftsmanship
3) Reflect/Revise - when you finish coloring, look at what you have done. Ask yourself what can be improved, or what needs to be changed. If you would like feedback from Mr Mac, post a photo of your work to Artsonia in "Mid-Unit Feedback" folder
4) Presenting - Complete artwork. Meet the deadline. Post a photo of your work to Artsonia in "Projects (Completed Work)" folder - Due Thurs, April 2 at 3pm
5) Responding - Write an artist statement telling us about the process and your work, including what you did to achieve quality craftsmanship
*if you are unable to print documents at home, place paper on top of screen and use a pencil to lightly trace the image.
**if you don't have color pencils, markers or crayons at home, use a pencil or pen
Finally, if tracing a design doesn't seem logical to you, you may create your own design. The learning is focused on shape and quality craftsmanship. Strive to develop something that demonstrates understanding of those concepts.
