TREC is an outdoor education focused program that includes a series of Grade 9-12 courses which leads to a regular B.C. Highschool Dogwood Graduation Diploma completion. TREC is a district program offered at the Winchelsea Place Learning Center and is affiliated with the Rivers, Ocean and Mountains School (ROAMS). TREC focuses on adventure tourism, sport & recreation, environmental science and community connections in School District 69. All grade 9-12 required core academics are completed through project-based learning projects directly connected to outdoor education field study activities.

Accepts 16 students who want to complete a regular BC Dogwood Diploma through combining academics with outdoor education experiential learning activities
Students who are in grade 9 - 12
Students who want to be much more physically active in school
Students who want to be become positive, active community members
Students who are interested in future employment in adventure tourism sectors
Activities/Trips may include:
Mountain Biking – Local trails, Squamish and Whistler Bike Park
Indoor/Outdoor Rock Climbing – Local crags and Squamish
Ski/Snowboard Adventure Education – Mt Washington, Mt Cain and Manning Park
River Kayaking festivals – Cowichan River Youth Kayaking and Puntledge festivals
Rafting and River Kayaking (single day and multi-day trips)– Stamp, Cowichan, Englishman, Puntledge, Nimpkish rivers
Surfing – Tofino and other various West Coast locations
Paddleboarding – local lakes
Canoeing and Ocean Kayaking– various locations around south-central Vancouver Island
Hiking – various locations around south-central Vancouver Island
Traditional PE activities – basketball, floor hockey, badminton, etc
Sports Fitness and Conditioning
Firewood fundraising
Community stewardship labour projects
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
TREC students will be expected to attend school 4 days per week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Monday & Thursdays will be classroom days and Tuesdays & Fridays will be field study activity days. Wednesdays and some additional days following overnight trips will be home study days. There will also be many extended days and some weekend activities. A flexible timetable will allow students to participate in extended educational opportunities while also participating in experiential education activities that are directly connected to academics and lead to BC Dogwood Highschool Graduation Diploma.
Students will be required to pay for, ski lift passes (student rate), equipment rentals (where applicable), and meals. The program will look to cover transportation costs, guide fees, and accommodations where applicable. Students who are unable to pay will be given fundraising opportunities that include firewood and general labour. Families should expect an approximate cost of $1000 over the length of the school year. Students are also encouraged to acquire their own outdoor gear, which includes mountain bike, helmet, wetsuit, ski/snowboard, small personal tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, hiking boots and outdoor clothing suitable for adverse weather. TREC has shared school equipment for loan and rental opportunities exist for all equipment required to participate in field study activity sessions.
No student is excluded due to inability to pay. Additional learning extensions and leadership opportunities may be offered to students with special interests.
