Global ROAMS is a semester long program that is available for students in Grades 10-12 at Ballenas (fall semester), and Kwalikum (spring semester). There are 24 seats available, and the class composition is ~50% Canadian students and ~50% International students. Students work together in a cohort and are not enrolled in any classes outside of the program. Within the Global ROAMS programs, 6 different course credits are offered, including:
Environmental Science 12
Socials 11/12
Leadership
Outdoor Ed 11
Outdoor Ed 12
PE Active Living
There are no required pre-requisites for any of the courses in this program.
Outdoor component:
For outdoor education, there is a large variety of trips and activities, which may include basic First Aid and Food Safe certifications, hiking, rock climbing, camping, biking, paddle boarding, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, swimming, skating, snowshoeing, skiing/snowboarding, and more.
Academic component:
Environmental Science and Social Studies are the academic courses in this program. These courses will also have integrated field experiences throughout the semester, such as trips to museums, legislature, environmental interest sites, and more.
Global ROAMS is a unique program with incredible opportunities for students to engage in hands on learning experiences both inside and out of the classroom. As such, a higher level of expectations is in place for students than would be in a regular classroom setting.
Global ROAMS has a flexible schedule that will sometimes operate outside of traditional school hours. A typical week will have 2-3 days of academic classroom time, and 2-3 days spent in field experiences. Many field days will be within traditional school hours, while some trips may require longer days – early starts, late finishes, or overnight stays.
The lead instructors for Global ROAMS are Heather Quinn and Ben Leggett. For more information about the program, please contact them at:
