Outdoor Pursuits is a program of choice available at Ballenas Secondary School for Grade 9 students. The program delivers Grade 9 Math, Science, Career Education, and Physical and Health Education. Learning happens in the classroom and through experiential learning in the field. The cohort is with Mr. Quinn for two blocks, studying Math/Science in the classroom and participating in outdoor experiences, learning activities and labs.
Students are introduced to a variety of Outdoor Activities including hiking, climbing, and skiing.
The program includes:
half-day trips within the Ballenas block schedule
full day trips, sometimes leaving before school and returning after school (i.e. ski trips to Mt. Washington)
overnight trips (3 - 4 trips throughout the year)
A summative, extended trip (up to 5 days) in June
The base cost for the program is $400 with additional payments for skiing (around $200 depending on rentals) and for the summative trip in June (maximum $200 depending on the location)
District assistance is available for families in need
There is a required gear list including hiking boots and non-cotton clothing (other gear can be borrowed from the district)
Students are expected to follow the ODP Behaviour Contract, be positive representatives of Ballenas, and cannot participate on trips unless they participate in the classroom and stay up on their school work
