Theatre Production is an outside-of-regular timetable class, where students work collaboratively in multiple sections, including but not limited to: Acting, Stagecraft, Choreographing, Lighting, Staging, Vocal Work, and Live Band Accompaniment. All work to put on a theatrical performance each year in the Spring.
Theatre Production is an opportunity for learning in a whole different environment, centered specifically on play and creativity.
Attendance and participation are a must for the collaborative nature of this course. Assessment is based on contributions to the production, the work ethic demonstrated throughout the rehearsal process, and the ability to creatively express one's ideas alongside a dynamic team of others
Rehearsals will be scheduled outside the timetable with students' other commitments in mind, but students should expect to be prepared to commit to this course as they would to any other serious endeavor.

We meet at least once a week, all year. Must be able to commit to completing work outside of school hours (at lunch or afterschool), especially near deadlines!

Fitness and Conditioning is an out of timetable class that has been developed to support student athletes balance their academic and athletic responsibilities. Students will complete 12 assignments throughout the year that will be designed to empower external student athletes, tune up executive functioning skills, explore their movement patterns and fitness specific to their sport, and consider strengths and stretches as a student athlete. The assignments are designed to complement and support student athletes' work in their sport. Students will be required to attend an intro class in person as well as monthly check ins with the teacher.
This course might be right for you if:
You want to work on your organizational skills to improve school/sport balance.
You want to analyze your movement to better understand your sport.
You would like to earn credits that represent your athletic efforts beyond the school.
If regular check ins with Ms.Stapleton would be useful for you to make sure you're on track with your academics.

learning about our own personal heritage
learning the traditional language, knowledge, and songs of the Indigenous people whose land we learn on (Lil’wat and Squamish Nations)
taking action on issues of social justice and helping to provide education about Indigenous issues in Canada

Grade 11 – 12 students interest in the athletics community at WSS (2 or 4 credits)
Contribute to school and community events through a variety of leadership projects/activities focusing on, but not restricted to athletic endeavors.
Learn leadership styles and skills to include time management, event planning/marketing, problem solving/decision making, communication skills, stress management, and collaboration.
Rationale: Whistler Secondary’s Athletic Program is a vibrant component of the educational experience at Whistler Secondary for its student community. Through Athletic Leadership, students provide support to extra -curricular teams through mentoring and facilitating. They also lend support to a variety of school wide events such as pep rallies, spirit day, home games and the Athletic Recognition Banquet.
There will be an application form that must be completed to be considered for this course. More information will come from counsellors and the Athletic Leadership teacher.
Up to 16 credits maximum
Students are able to earn four grade 12 credits for each 100 hours of work and accompanying documentation, up to a maximum of 16 credits. This class requires meetings with your teacher and your employer.
This is a great way to learn new employability skills, meet new people, and explore the world of work while earning elective credits.
Please look for an announcement or email about work experience in the fall, or see Mr. Blaikie before the end of the year if you would like the paperwork to start earning credits if you are working this summer.

The Early Childhood Education program is in partnership with Northern Lights College.
There are 2 different NLC courses available for HSS students (HDEC 100 & HDEC103). These are online courses offered through NLC. Students are expected to complete coursework independently. WSS support will be limited to assisting students with an orientation of the NLC learning platform.
Each of these classes will provide you with the credits required to become a Certified Early Childcare Assistant with the ECE Registry in the Province of BC.
To be accepted into the program at NLC students going into grade 12 will require the following:
English 11 with a B or higher
A completed Criminal Record Check
If you are enrolled in English 12 in semester 1 you need a B or higher at midterm.
Students going into grade 11 will require the following:
A completed English 11 with a B or higher by Mid-November 2024
A completed Criminal Record Check
Students who complete the ECE program with NLC will be placed as a work experience student in the community once the program concludes if their timetable allows it. There is an option for students to take additional ECE courses at NLC once these first two are completed. The NLC courses are available for a September entry & January entry (mixed post-secondary and high school student cohorts) and a February entry (high school only cohort). This is a dual credit program, students will gain four grade 12 credits for each NLC course.
