The research behind RULER shows that if a student can accurately identify the emotion they are feeling, they are better able to handle it appropriately. Students will practice identifying the emotion they are feeling several times a day at school using the Mood Meter.
We will do a variety of activities throughout the year to help the students learn strategies that can be used to maintain their current emotion or change it depending upon the situation. We are very excited to help our students become more emotionally aware of themselves and others!
It is important for students to understand that there are no bad emotions and that how they are feeling is not wrong.
Students will learn 12 emotion words in 5th grade to help them better be able to label the emotion they are feeling.
When a student can specifically name how they are feeling, they will have an easier time handling that emotion.
Second Step
We will also use Second Step, in conjunction with RULER, to enhance your fifth grader's social emotional learning journey. Your fifth grader will be taught skills needed to take on learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.
Please click on the following unit titles to view the Family Home Link for each unit your fifth grader will be experiencing. Each Home Link explains what your fifth grader is learning, why it is important, and provides things you can do at home to practice!
