PV 5th Grade Team

In fifth grade, we have many components that make up our reading program. Students will grow as readers, writers, listeners and speakers using EL Education. EL Education is a curriculum that provides regular close reading of complex text while providing opportunities for real research and authentic writing. The texts we will read together will develop strong habits of character due to the topics and guiding questions of each module. Reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar instruction will be woven together to enrich the learning experience. Individual conferences will be used to build the student’s use of reading strategies in both shared reading and independent reading.

The students will be participating in a researched based practice of reading various book genres, journaling about what they have read, “buzzing” about the books they are reading with classmates, and conferencing with their teacher about what they have read.

Students will still be required to read 30 minutes each night, and will have a specific focus as they use post-it notes or a recording log to record a particular reading strategy or skill they are using. It is necessary that your child spend time reading each day.

Daily 3 is another component of our reading block. During this time, students will have more opportunities to practice the skills and strategies they have been learning. This will be done either independently or in teacher-led small groups. The groups can be homogeneous or heterogeneous depending on the specified objective. It is during this time that students will build their stamina for reading to self, work through reading lessons assigned to them in iReady and have opportunities for further enrichment through book clubs.
