Julianna Karvelius attended Elmhurst University and graduated in 2010 with a degree in Music Education. While at Elmhurst, she was active in many different ensembles and professional organizations including musical ensembles, Sigma Alpha Iota, and the National Association for Music Education. Ms. Karvelius worked at Traughber Jr. High School with Mrs. Rachel Maxwell as the associate director of bands during the 2011-2012 school year. She has been at Murphy since its opening in 2012. In 2017,  she completed her Master of Music Education degree at the University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign. Ms. Karvelius is a past presenter and performer at the Illinois Music Education Association state conference as well as the past District 9 Jr. Jazz Representative for ILMEA.  

In SD308, Ms. Karvelius serves as a representative on the School Board Community Advisory Committee and works to serve the school district with a passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. At Murphy, she teaches band and runs the extra curricular jazz band. She is also the Murphy Jr. High School webmaster.
