****ADD A FOLDER TO YOUR PORTFOLIO TITLED "1.3 CLIMATE." AND SAVE ALL WORK IN YOUR FOLDER****
Goal Standard: Students will understand that Earth has a variety of climates defined by average temperature precipitation, humidity air pressure and wind that have changed over time in a particular location
How is weather different than climate?
How do we differentiate one climate zone from another?
How is climate change affecting severe weather?
Learning Experience:
Brainstorm Break and Weather vs. Climate Discussion (must-do)
Mini-Lesson: Severe Weather and Climate (must-do)
Weather vs. Climate Research (must-do)
Does Understanding Climate Matter? (should-do)
Create a Quiz: Extreme Weather Caused by Climate Change (must-do)
Severe Weather IRG ***with or without a partner (should-do)
Gizmo- Comparing Climates (should-do)
M&M Lab- Difference Between Weather and Climate (aspire to-do)
Evidence:
Weather vs. Climate Assessment to determine if you can:
differentiate between weather and climate
explain how severe weather occurs
connect all these ideas to climate change
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE SIGNED IN ONCE YOU GET ON THE PADLET OR ADD YOUR NAME TO THE POST SO PEOPLE KNOW WHO YOU ARE. IF THERE IS NO NAME, YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT FOR YOUR THINKING.
Go back to our Weather Terms Discussion Board with your thoughts, definitions, and questions about previous terms or topics. Add, revise, and/or answer any questions from that discussion thread now that your understanding has grown! Now that you understand these ideas better, you should have new and different questions we can use to drive our thinking deeper.
THEN consider the prompts below in the Weather vs. Climate section of the Padlet.
Part 1: Post a comment on the column Weather vs. Climate. Your response should be at least 4 complete sentences. Make sure you support your claims with evidence and reasoning/justification (CER language). Consider the following questions:
How are weather and climate similar and different?
Do humans impact weather? Do humans impact climate?
In your opinion, which is more important: weather or climate? Why?
Part 2: Post a response to at least one of your classmates. Must be at least 1 complete sentence that furthers their thinking about the topic. Consider the following questions as you write your response:
How can you deepen your classmate's understanding of the topic?
What questions do you have about your classmate's claims? How can you use questioning to deepen their thinking?
Do you disagree with any of your classmate's claims? If so why? What information do you have that challenges their claims?
Watch the mini-lesson from either Schmidt or Fryska. Complete the guided note template as you watch the lesson. Take a picture of your notes and upload to your Climate Folder.
Each student will make a copy of the worksheet and upload the finished product to their Climate folder. Please only use the three websites listed for you research.
Each student will make a copy of the assignment and upload the finished product to their Climate folder. You may collaborate with a partner, but all submitted work must be in your own words (that means phrased DIFFERENTLY than you partner, not copied). Be sure to read all instructions carefully and ask your teacher questions if you don't understand what to do.

Password - regular student login password If you've never been on Gizmo, you will need to click the registration option.
3) Select the Comparing Climates Gizmo and engage in the lab!
Use the Edpuzzle and Padlet to explore this question and record your thoughts. Make sure you take time to look at other classmate's thoughts and respond to them. Keep the conversation going!
Use the resources provided to create a quiz AND answer key that could be taken by one of your classmates to determine how well they understand the following:
the CAUSES of severe weather
its connection/ or lack of connection to climate change
general safety if caught in severe weather (this will require a bit of extra research)
***Quizzes can be done using a google doc, a kahoot, gimkit, written on a sheet of paper a taken a picture of, etc.
The difference between weather and climate
The characteristics used to describe different climate zones
How humans are impacting climate
Severe weather patterns and the atmospheric conditions that lead to their formation
THAT'S THE END OF LESSON 1.3. ENSURE ALL WORK IS SAVED IN YOUR FOLDER, SUBMIT YOUR FOLDER ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM, SHOW MASTERY ON YOUR ASSESSMENT, AND THEN MOVE ON TO LESSON 1.4.
