Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures when we drive a car, order food in a restaurant, and talk on the phone. We need procedures in life so we can function in society knowing the acceptable and efficient ways to accomplish tasks. Listed below are our classroom procedures to help achieve a successful and safe classroom environment.
General Classroom Procedures
1. Beginning of class- Students are expected to come to class prepared, sit in their assigned seats, and quietly copy down the ‘opening’ of the lesson. Students are expected to enter the classroom using the three C’s: cool, calm, and collected.
2. Tardy students- Tardy students need a pass from the office. When a student is tardy, he/she should immediately sit in his/her desk and wait for me to give instructions. Three tardies equals a lunch detention.
3. Moving around the classroom- Students should take the most direct route to a location in the classroom and respect our classroom environment and personal space. It is important to remember that every activity or assignment has a deadline, and students should not waste time walking around the classroom.
4. Getting my attention- When a student needs my attention, they should quietly raise their hand. A student should not shout out my name or get out of his/her desk to gain my attention.
5. Getting students’ attention-I will ask you for your attention once.
6. Talking during class- Students are expected to follow the given procedures for every activity. Class discussions, individual work, and group work require students to interact with one another. However, when I am instructing the class, students are expected to focus and listen. “You give me my time, and I’ll give you your time!” Kids need to be kids, but if we don’t accomplish daily tasks, their personal time is limited.
7. Collecting work- I will ask students to collect work. If class work is not completed due to defiance, the student will have a ‘working’ lunch in my classroom and/or a detention will be issued. I have procedures in place for students to hand in work. Sliding work underneath the classroom door is prohibited.
8. Classroom Visitors- Most visitors will want to quietly observe our class. They want to see students engaged, not distracted. Politely greet our visitors and continue with the lesson.
9. Restroom and locker breaks- Breaks and passes will be given throughout the day. Hall passes are recorded in the back of their agenda. They have 5 passes per quarter for all classes. Students will be responsible for filling out these passes. Students should only leave the classroom when it is an emergency. You cannot learn when you are not in class. Students are expected to carry our school agenda (handbook) to every class. If they do not have their agenda, they will not use the restroom.
10. End of class- Class is dismissed by rows or groups. Students should keep their desk area clean. When the bell rings, wait for any last-minute announcements/reminders.
11. Walking in the halls- “Walk” is the key word: no running, yelling, or pushing. Pushing and shoving is an immediate detention.
12. Heading papers- Students are expected to put their first and last name on the top of their paper. Then Period, and class, then date.
13. Pen or pencil- Math is easier when using a pencil; other subjects you can write with pen. Every student is expected to bring pencils and paper to class. Work is expected to be legible. A notebook and folder are highly recommended.
14. Absent- When a student is absent, he/she is responsible for any missed assignments. They are responsible to contact me or the class secretary for work they missed.
15. Late work- Every student has until the following Monday to complete late work. There’s a 20% grade deduction for late work. Work will not be accepted after one week has passed. Skyward is the best way to monitor grades and missing assignments.
16. Fire Drills- When the fire alarm sounds, students should stop talking and move quietly towards the door. Students will exit the building according to the directions posted near the door. The teacher is responsible for getting everyone out safely, so there MUST be cooperation in this matter.
17. Lock-down- Immediately stop all talking and listen for directions from the teacher. Every lock-down is taken very seriously.
18. Reading- I am a HUGE advocate for reading. Students should always have a book with them. They can silently read if they complete daily assignments and do not have missing work.
19. HOMEWORK- Assigned Khan Academy activities whenever you have time. Twenty minutes a night will help immensely.
20. Class of the month- Each month I award the class who exceeded academic and behavioral expectations.
21. Discuss materials in the room- jobs, sharpening pencils, tissues, hand sanitizer, special chairs, markers, dry erase boards, etc.
