Lesson 1: Watersheds
We All Live in a Watershed
We All Live in a Watershed
What Students Will Learn:
How water flows within a watershed and how development can affect it.
We'll use this space to share teaching tips that are shared with us (via feedback) from other teachers!
Additional Resources:
This "how-to" document has all the info you need for using the SD1 Education Program Watershed Mapping Tool to locate your school, identify your watershed, determine your site's impervious surface sq. ft., etc.
This "how-to" document explains how to use the SD1 Education Program Watershed Mapping Tool to calculate your school's rooftop storm water runoff during a 1" rain event.
Model My Watershed is a watershed-modeling web app that enables students to analyze real land use and soil data in their neighborhoods and watersheds, model stormwater runoff and water-quality impacts using professional-grade models, and compare how different conservation or development scenarios could modify runoff and water quality.
The Runoff Simulation is an animated version of the Site Storm Model package of Model My Watershed. It allows users to learn how land use and soil together determine whether rainfall infiltrates into the soil, runs off into streams or is evaporated and transpired by plants.
Learn about the Little Miami River habitat and the aquatic life that calls it home from the Little Miami Conservancy. Go beneath the surface to learn about Sonny and his freshwater friends!
"Smallmouth Sonny of Bass Island Bar is a color-illustrated children’s storybook that takes place on the Little Miami National Wild and Scenic River in Southwest Ohio. Entertaining and educational, the story features fictional characters based on wildlife that actually live in and along this beautiful river. Small Fry Sonny, an infant smallmouth bass, is swept downstream during a spring storm and carried far from his home and friends at Bass Island Bar. Sonny encounters danger along the way and gets help from several river critters in finding his way back upstream where Sonny’s friends cheer and welcome him home. In honor of his courage and persistence, his friends give Small Fry Sonny a new name upon his arrival: Smallmouth Sonny of Bass Island Bar. Beautifully written by Bill Schroeder and cleverly illustrated by artist James Billiter, this book offers early readers an appreciation of conservation and river ecology."
"This educational picture book is about a little girl with a big story to tell – Why Water's Worth It. With her nose buried in her book, she carries young readers through the world of clean water, how it's managed, and the importance of everyone working together to protect it."
See what a watershed is, what it means and what it includes.
"We have a lot of water on Earth, but we also can't actually drink much of it... or use it for farming. That's because most of the water on Earth is saltwater. We humans, like a lot of living things, need freshwater to survive. In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina talks about the difference between freshwater and saltwater and why freshwater is so important."
"What happens to a single ecosystem when the amount of freshwater available in it changes? Not really much good. In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina talks about ecosystems and how one small change can lead to a cascade effect in the entire ecosystem."
"Today we continue our exploration of the Water Cycle by drinking some dinosaur pee. Yep! Well, it's a little less gross that it sounds. It turns out that all of the water on Earth is just constantly recycled in what we call a closed system. No water comes in and no water goes out. So that means that, at some point, it's possible the water we're drinking was once dinosaur pee... or tears..."

"Water is essential for life on Earth. From oceans to rivers to clouds in the sky, NASA satellites are observing where Earth’s water is found--and how that is changing over time."
