Indiana Beach

History

Indiana Beach is located on Lake Shafer in Monticello. The amusement park was originally name Ideal Beach. It was owned by the Spackman family for over 80 years. The first permanent rides, the Ferris wheel and the merry go round, were built in 1947. Restaurants, dance halls, boardwalks, roller coasters, and the water park were added over the years.

Did you know?

The Ferris wheel was invented by George W.G. Ferris Jr. He built the first one for the 1893 World's Fair, in Chicago, Illinois.

Future

Indiana Beach will open the 2021 season in early summer with two new rides. The first, called the Polyps, is a green scrambler ride and the second is the Dreier Looping Roller Coaster.

Engineering Connection

If you have ridden on a Ferris wheel? If so, you have seen a wheel and axle at work. In a Ferris wheel, the force is applied to the axle (or center rod) by a motor. That makes the wheel turn with less force. The wheel turns over a greater distance, it also turns faster than the axle. The speed of the wheel is one reason that the Ferris wheel ride is so exciting.
