Whiting &
Lake Michigan

Whiting's History

Whiting got its name, when in 1869, a train engineer named “Pop” Whiting ditched his heavy freight train so a fast passenger train behind him could have the right of way. Henry Schrage was one of our founding citizens and opened the first store. He became the postmaster when the first post office was built in 1871 . Standard Oil started buying land in 1889 and Whiting became a city in 1895.

Did you know?

Whiting is 3.2 square miles and 44% of that area is water! Lake Michigan to be exact. Lake Michigan is the third largest Great Lake by surface area.
