2012 Sports Department in the Spotlight

Learning a new sport is exciting and challenging in equal measure and the 2012 Physical Education team are always seeking out new exciting sports to bring to both the students and staff.

Sports in education have benefits far beyond health, albeit health in itself is of optimal importance. Sports also help in the overall development of students, teaching lessons in life such as teamwork, self-confidence, responsibility and self-discipline.

Recently, the students and staff have been enjoying learning pickleball, disc golf and rounders.

Staff and students alike have enjoyed the training sessions and now the 2012 team would like to share with you the basics of each sport. Perhaps you would like to try them at home!

Keep an eye on future issues, as next the students and staff will be learning the skills required for yoga, dodgeball, archery and trampolining!

Pickleball

Fun, social and friendly. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, Washington. Three dads – Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum — whose kids were bored with their usual summertime activities — are credited for creating the game. Pickleball has evolved from original handmade equipment and simple rules into a popular sport throughout the US and Canada. The game is growing internationally as well, with many European and Asian countries adding courts.

Disc Golf

Disc Golf originated in the USA in the late 1960’s and has spread throughout the world. It’s just like ‘ball’ golf, the main difference being it is played by throwing a flying disc into a metal target instead of hitting a ball into a hole. The aim is to send the ‘golf disc’ from tee to basket in the fewest throws.

The rules and basic skills are simple to grasp, allowing beginners to immediately have fun challenging themselves with friends.

Disc golf offers a unique way of experiencing the countryside and connecting with nature. It’s fun, inexpensive and very environmentally friendly.

Rounders

Rounders is a fun, exhilarating and competitive sport.

The game of rounders has been played in England since tudor times, with the earliest reference being in 1744 in A Little Pretty Pocket-Book where it was called base-ball. In 1828, William Clarke in London published a book which included the rules of rounders and also the first printed description in English of a bat and ball base-running game played on a diamond. The following year, the book was published in Boston Massachusetts.
