Madonna of the Belt
Saint Martino and Saint Leonardo's Collegiate Church
Madonna of the Belt
Saint Martino and Saint Leonardo's Collegiate Church
The work has to be esteemed one of the best by Andrea Della Robbia to all intents and purposes for the perfection of the execution.
The Virgin occupies the central part of the altarpiece and she is shown on the point of giving the saint belt (which represents her Virginity) to Saint Thomas, knelt down below her together with Saint Leonardo.
On the predella strip there are two flying angels holding two scrolls and a garland tied with blue and yellow ribbons, within which there are two cherub angels who support a goblet with three patents above it.
On the two extremes of the step the patrons are depicted, both knelt down. Under the step an inscription is placed: " QUIRICO M.JACOPA".
Between the altarpiece and the predella strip people can still read this sign: "THIS PANEL WAS COMMISSIONED BY QUIRICO DI BARTOLOMEO DI SERIACOPO. MADE ON APRIL 12TH 1502".
