Scout sources our Albacore tuna from the Pacific Northwest. The PNW Albacore tunae population is found to be naturally low in mercury and is tested annually for mercury via the Canadian Highly Migratory Species Foundation (CHMSF). . Analysis of mercury in British Columbia Albacore tuna falls well below safety standards set by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the USFDA. Annual samples indicate the mean Mercury level in BC Albacore tuna was 0.178 ppm which is significantly lower than the Canadian Standard of 0.5 ppm and the US Standard of 1.0 ppm.
Additionally, to ensure low mercury levels, our tuna is harvested around 3-4 years old when mercury levels are naturally low due to their small size and weight, approx 5-25 lbs. Mature Albacore tuna can grow up to 90 lbs.
Our trout are farmed and raised in lake net pens in Ontario lakes. The trout are fed certified sustainable feed that meets their dietary requirements for a happy and healthy trout. The FDA and the Government of Canada have created guidelines prohibiting mercury levels in rainbow trout to be greater than 0.678ppm and 0.5ppm, respectively. Our annual CFIA testing averages 0.01 ppm of mercury, which is well under the limit deemed safe for consumption (0.5ppm and 1.0ppm in the US!
Both lobster & mussels are naturally low in mercury. We do not test our lobster and mussels because there are no mercury concerns given the diet and maturity of those species. Mercury is a concern for highly migratory species that feed for several years or decades on smaller fish which causes them to accumulate mercury (Marlin, Swordfish, etc.)
