Thank you for your interest in the SCMS band program. Students in band will learn to produce a tone, read and interpret music, and develop technique on their specific instruments. Students will present performances as a full band. Your child will soon be making squeaks and squawks, be supportive, it does get better!
We will discuss and choose instruments during class the first week of school. There are several things to consider in choosing which instrument to play, including physical characteristics of the student and the need for balanced instrumentation in the class. Ultimately our only goal is to find the instrument that gives them the best chance of success if they put in the effort.
The first semester serves as a trial period in band and we highly recommend that parents rent an instrument during this time.
Tuesday, September 3rd is instrument rental night. For your convenience in renting a quality instrument, we have a special meeting planned for parents and students at the Scott County High School band room. Representatives from Hurst Music, ph. (859) 335-0500, a music store in Lexington, will be present; and parents will be given the opportunity to rent an instrument and purchase a band method book. Times will be sent later, depending on the instrument chosen.
The directors from all the Scott County middle schools and additional helpers will instruct students in the assembly of their instrument and production of the first musical tone! ** The band room is located in the back of the high school, please enter next to the gym.
WHY RENT? First, you are guaranteed a properly working instrument and any repairs during the rental period are covered 100%. In addition, if your child decides to drop band after the trial period you are only invested for the few months you actually rent and do not have to spend large amounts on a new or used instrument.

Those students who already have an instrument need to bring it to school so that the band directors can check it for its playing efficiency. It is impossible to learn to play on an instrument that does not work. (No antiques, please).

SCHOOL LOANED INSTRUMENTS - For students who have a financial need, there is a small supply of school owned instruments that can be used while your child is at SCMS. Please contact Mr. Bond directly to request one. Parents - I do all I can to make certain every child who truly wants to be a part of band is able to participate but funds are resources are in short supply.
All band students will need to have a quality instrument and a band book in class by Wednesday, September 4th.

Please, DO NOT go purchase an instrument without talking to Mr. Bond first. There are many excellent instruments available to parents and there are many that will be a waste of your money and frustrating for your child to use.
If you have an instrument in the family to let your child use, please let Mr.Bond OR a qualified music store like Hurst Music evaluate and make certain the instrument is in top notch condition! No one succeeds on an instrument that doesn't work!
