Characterization allows readers to understand who the character is. Using characterization techniques, readers can infer if the character is a stereotypical jock or a little less stereotypical than we might have thought. It also allows readers to infer if the character is one of the good guys or the bad. Characterization is all about inferring who our characters are as people on a deeper level. The following slides review different techniques that readers can employ to "read" characters, fictional or not.
