Kim Bennett- Science

My name is Kim Bennett, and this is my fifth year here at SCA! I love teaching science to provide engaging opportunities for scholars to interact with the 6th grade standards. I have a Bachelor's of Business Administration from Georgia Southern University, and I earned my Middle Grades Science/ Social Studies teaching certification from Valdosta State University. I enjoy traveling, reading, and spending time with my two sons and husband.

Melissa Carden - Social Studies

I am originally from the Atlanta area, but I have been living in South Georgia since the early nineties. I have a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education from Georgia Southern University and a Master of Education from Valdosta State University. I have taught middle school for thirty one years and spent the nineteen years at Baconton Community Charter School before transitioning to Scintilla Charter Academy. I am excited to once again be part of a charter school that puts its heart and soul into creating a safe, creative, and successful school environment.

I genuinely enjoy helping my students navigate through their adolescent years to become independent learners. There is nothing more satisfying and entertaining than watching my students empower themselves to create their own identity through my classroom environment that promotes trust, curiosity, accountability, humor, and a willingness to make the unobvious obvious. Promoting ownership of their lives is a great way for them to spread their wings and show the world their true potential as youth leaders.

Julia Wright - ELA

Hello, my name is Julia Wright and I teach sixth grade ELA. This is my sixth year of teaching, and my second year teaching at Scintilla. I have a bachelor's degree from The University of Georgia for middle grades education with an emphasis on Language Arts and Social Studies. Prior to moving to Valdosta, I taught fifth grade reading in Navarre, Florida. I briefly took some time to stay home with my three children where we moved as a family to Okinawa, Japan and Tucson, Arizona. We are a military family and feel privileged to have been a part of so many diverse communities. In my spare time, I visit the beach as often as possible. I also have a love for plants, crossfit, reading, and playing with my kids.

Lynette NewHam- Intervention Specialist

My name is Lynette Newham. I am excited to be a part of the teaching staff here at Scintilla Charter Academy, co-teaching with the 6th grade teachers. I received my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Special Education at Valdosta State University, and I received my Specialist Degree in Education at Nova Southeastern University. I have been teaching for over 30 years, and I continue to enjoy working with our scholars every day!  I believe that a student's academic success is individualized and specific. When given encouragement and the unique instruction they need, all students will learn, grow, and become successful life-long learners. Outside of school, I love to travel, read, and bake. I also scuba dive with my husband when possible. Go Spartans!
