Applying to College:
Completing an application:
Colleges generally prefer to receive electronic applications, but paper applications are sometimes still available on the college website or by contacting the admissions office. Many colleges utilize Common App, which allows students to fill out one "common" application and send it to multiple participating colleges in order to save time (application fees and supplemental materials are still required for each individual school).
Regardless of how the application is submitted, an admission decision will not be made until all required information is received by the college. Students should request that their official transcript be sent to the Admissions Office of each college to which they have applied. In addition, students should request teacher recommendations for those colleges that require them.
When to apply:
Some schools have specific application deadlines; others are on 'rolling' admissions (i.e. processing applications as soon as they receive them) beginning in the early fall. In general, it is advisable to submit applications well (at least 3-4 weeks) before the specific deadline or in early-mid fall.
Early Decision:
When deciding whether or not to submit an early decision application, students and their parents should first carefully research the specific conditions established by the college. At many schools, an early decision application is considered to be a binding agreement to attend if accepted and should only be pursued if a student has firmly decided on a ‘first choice’ school. Other colleges offer early decisions without any specific obligation from the student.
SV Procedure:
Applications require an official high school transcript that is sent directly from the high school to the college. A student transcript includes the final grades of all completed high school courses, SAT and/or ACT scores, the student’s school activities, senior courses in progress (including any senior grades that are available), class rank and grade point averages (GPAs) for each grade and overall. Seniors should make sure they have their Parchment accounts set up to request their transcript electronically. Email the school counselor with questions. See "Need a transcript?" on the Counseling Center website to request a transcript through a fillable PDF, alternately.
Recommendations/Counselor Forms:
Many schools require teacher and/or counselor recommendations. Students should request counselor recommendations from their counselor and teacher recommendations from the teachers of their choice. Teachers/recommenders can email their letters directly to the admissions offices of the colleges students are applying to. It is customary for a student to provide a stamped envelope, already addressed to the college admissions office, when requesting a teacher recommendation in hard copy. It is strongly recommended that requests for recommendations be made well in advance of when they are needed – certainly no less than two weeks before any deadline.
