Credit and Grade Recovery

Credit vs. Grade Recovery with APEX Learning

There is a distinct difference between credit and grade recovery, but they are related because both can be accomplished by similar means.

CREDIT RECOVERY is the process of retaking a class in which an "F" grade was assigned and no credit was earned for the term (semester).

GRADE RECOVERY is the process in which a student earns a "D" as a final grade and wants to improve the grade by retaking the same class (additional credit is NOT earned).

What is APEX Learning?

APEX Learning is an online program that allows students to recover credits needed for graduation. Students taking APEX classes work with teachers, who help and guide students through their APEX courses, which includes teaching, providing feedback on labs and activities, and unlocking quizzes and tests. Students are required to do an online orientation and attend class in person, so teachers can unlock quizzes and tests.

Credit Recovery during Summer School

If a student fails a core class, they must come to summer school.

Summer school begins the week after the school year ends and lasts for 3 weeks. Students must be present on the Steele Canyon campus to remediate classes. Students usually can complete 10 credits/2 quarters during summer school. Priority for summer school is credit recovery, but grade recovery can also be done.

Information about summer school is available in May.

Credit Recovery during School Year

Limited spaces are available for students to complete
credit recovery through the APEX program.

Priority is always given to seniors in need of graduation requirements. In addition, courses are limited to only core requirements. Students have to sign an agreement with their Counseling team and teacher of record. They will have 4 weeks to complete the course. Students are limited to retake 4 classes max in total in their entire high school career, unless there are special circumstances exempt by the student’s Grade Level Team (GLT).

Grade Recovery during the School Year

If a student received a “D” in any math class, the student has the opportunity to do grade recovery. The student and parent must sign a contract. The assigned teacher and student will create a meeting schedule for completing the unit work in order to recover their grade. Students will finish all assigned lessons, check ups, and quizzes for the remediation unit and the final grade on transcript will change.
