Community College Classes at Steele Canyon High School

These Cuyamaca College classes are taught on the Steele Canyon campus based on student interest. Not all classes are taught every term. Students taking these courses will receive credit at Steele Canyon High School towards graduation . The grades from these courses are also permanently on a student’s college transcript and will be transferred to the college they attend after high school.

ART124 - Drawing I 

Introduction to drawing theory and practice. Students will study major works of art in relation to drawing techniques, illusion of space, and composition through a variety of media. This course is UC/CSU transferable.


ASL 120 - American Sign Language I

Students will develop skills in telling about and comprehending common everyday activities and asking questions. Students will learn how to use non-manual signs, facial expressions and other culturally appropriate uses of the face and body to interact with, show comprehension, get attention, and form appropriate cultural connections with Deaf people.   This course is UC/CSU transferable and will meet the two year world language requirement for A-G University Requirements


ASL 121 - American Sign Language II

Students are provided an opportunity to progress and enhance their ability to communicate in ASL.  Students will continue the study of cultural analysis and comparisons, receptive skill comprehension, expressive skill production, and ASL linguistics.   This course is UC/CSU transferable.


BUS 110 - Intro to Business

This course provides a comprehensive view of today’s dynamic American business and the global economy. Topics include: starting a small business, satisfying customers, managing operations, motivating employees and building self-managed teams, developing and implementing customer-oriented marketing plans, managing information, managing financial resources, and exploring ethical and social responsibilities of American business.   This course is UC/CSU transferable.


MUS 110 - Great Music Listening

Listening and reading survey course to acquaint students with fundamental elements of musical style. Covers repertoire from a variety of cultures and periods with primary emphasis on the Western concert tradition. This course is UC/CSU transferable.


SPAN 220 – Spanish III

Spanish 220 is a college level Spanish class and can be taken as the fourth and final classes here at Steele Canyon. In this course students will further develop oral, listening, reading, and writing skills in order to acquire proficiency in Spanish.  Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or better in SPAN 121 or three years of high school Spanish. This course is UC/CSU transferable.

BUS 195: PERSONAL FINANCE

Explores the theories and techniques of managing personal income by setting life planning goals that will culminate in the development of a personal plan for students to manage their finances throughout the lifespan. Within the broad backdrop of business and economics in the United States, topics will include lifelong financial planning, budgeting, managing checking and savings accounts, building and maintaining good credit, retirement and estate planning, insurance, home ownership, and creating an investment portfolio

COUN 101: INTRODUCTION TO COLLEGE

An introductory course designed to assist students with a successful transition to college. An overview of student responsibilities, college expectations, and success strategies will be discussed. Students will learn about the college, its facilities, services, academic regulations, and degree and transfer programs. Students will receive guidance in education planning.

COUN 110: CAREER DECISION MAKING

-Utilization of a group seminar structure to explore and research various career and major options. Lecture, group discussion, experiential activities, and vocational assessment tools will be utilized to assist students in identifying their individual interests, values, and personality styles. Students will conduct educational and career research to relate their vocational assessment results to setting academic and career goals.

COUN 120: COLLEGE AND CAREER SUCCESS

-This course teaches success strategies to enhance academic and lifelong learning. The course also discusses the importance of looking at the human being as an integrated physiological, social and psychological organism. Students will explore personality types and examine their own interests and values as a way to increase self-understanding and select an appropriate major and career. Students will identify their learning style and apply psychological principles of learning, memory, motivation and stress management to academic study strategies. Students will also apply life management techniques, such as time and money management, to accomplish personal goals. Students will examine the adult stages of development and develop a plan for wellness and living a long and healthy life. Additionally, students will be given the opportunity to practice creative and critical thinking techniques

ES 250: INTRODUCTION TO KINESIOLOGY

Introduction to the interdisciplinary approach to the study of human movement. An overview of the concepts within and importance of the sub-disciplines in kinesiology will be discussed, along with career opportunities in the areas of teaching, coaching, allied health, dietetic, and fitness professions.
