Undertale is a unique indie video game that has captured the hearts of players worldwide. With its memorable story, soundtrack, and new style of gameplay, Undertale challenges players to consider their actions and the impact they have on others.
Undertale was oringinally released in 2015 and developed by Toby Fox. Development was financed through a crowdfunding campaign on the website Kickstarter. Undertale is primarily known for its new approach to RPG gameplay, focusing on peaceful resolutions and player choices rather than traditional combat. The story focuses on a child who has fallen into the underground (a large, secluded region under the surface, separated by a magical barrier.) The player meets various monsters during the journey back to the surface, some of which engage in fights. The fighting system involves the player avoiding mini-bullet hell attacks by the opponent. The player can choose to flee from the monsters in order to spare them instead of killing them. These choices impact the game, as the dialogue, characters, and story evolve based on the outcomes.
The Undertale wiki explains that “The game was released for OS X and Windows in September 2015, Linux in July 2016, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in August 2017, the Nintendo Switch in September 2018, and Xbox One in March 2021.” I have played Undertale on Nintendo and I really enjoyed it. The game has sold at least five million copies and was nominated for multiple awards. Several gaming publications and conventions listed Undertale as game of the year, and others have since listed it as one of the greatest video games ever made.
Undertale is considered a very highly-rated game by critics, reflecting its quality and positive reception. The story is well-written, featuring fun yet often fairly deep characters and an interesting plot, as well as some fantastic emotional moments. The sparing system adds a lot of personality to enemies, and the extreme dodging makes combat pretty interesting. There is, of course, the soundtrack, which I’ve mentioned, that enhances all of that even further.
Overall, I rate this game a 10 out of 10.
