Civics for All

Civics for All provides resources, materials, professional learning, and student-facing programming to all NYCDOE schools. The initiative focuses on K-12 culturally responsive civic education models that are interactive, project-based, and relevant to students’ lives. We believe Civic education is an essential part of every student’s core academic program and that teaching the foundations and function of local, state, and federal government and the importance of engaging in the democratic process is necessary to build a more engaged, active future citizen and informed voter.

K-12 Civics for All Curriculum

The K-12 Civics for All curriculum was designed to provide high-quality civic learning opportunities to all students. The curriculum was designed as a companion to the Passport to Social Studies and integrated aspects of the NYSED Social Studies Framework’s Civic Participation Standards and the Next Generation Learning Standards. It was designed to be flexible enough to implement in a variety of settings and can be modified and adapted to fit the needs of all New York City classrooms. Each grade banded curriculum is split into four sections that unfold over two separate parts. The first and second sections provide guidance for teachers and administrators on quality civics instruction. Section three organizes a series of lessons and projects around key civic themes, and the fourth section provides grade-band appropriate activities to engage students in civic action projects.

Partner Program

The Civics for All Partner Program is an opportunity for districts across New York City Public Schools to implement Civics for All while receiving support from members of the Civics for All team and civics advocacy organizations. Partner Districts receive guidance in implementing instructional resources, accessing authentic civic learning opportunities, and implementing age appropriate civic action and real-life democracy projects. In addition to the curriculum, schools receive targeted support implementing three major components of Civics for All: SoapboxNYC, Participatory Budgeting, and Take Action!

In the 2023-2024 school year, Civics for All is supporting 11 school districts, impacting the learning of over 241,000 students citywide and supporting instruction in 9,900 K-12 classrooms. We look forward to welcoming an additional 18 districts by the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

Each dot represents one of the 119 current Seal of Civic Readiness High Schools, with many more set to join us before the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year.
