What's going on in the library?
Welcome to the new year in the HSTAT Library. So much has happened since September! As the school year continues, students are becoming more familiar with the library. As they learn how the library works, they are finding and borrowing more books. Many students choose to visit the library before school, during lunch, and after school. The library is an ever-changing place and it feels like a real community, where students can gather, learn, and explore. Here are some highlights!

In January, we feature books by Muslim American authors to celebrate their unique artistic and intellectual contributions. Recommended books are shown below, and many more can be found by searching the library catalog or by browsing the library display. Many are also available as digital ebooks and audiobooks. Here are instructions for logging in to the Citywide Digital Library on the Sora Reading App.

Library Transformations
More Space!
The library has changed so much since the beginning of 2025! We have managed to open up more space for students, including a lovely, sunny reading area.

New Books!
We have just received more than 1.200 new books, seen here waiting to be shelved! Many of these books were requested by students and staff using this request form. More books are on order and will arrive later in January.

Library Orientations and Workshops
In early December, all 9th grade ELA classes visited the library for orientations. Students participated in interactive discussions and games that taught them how the library is organized, what kinds of resources are here, and how to use the library to borrow books and do research. There is a 9th grade page on the library website with resources they can use for their Mythology unit. Earlier this fall, 10th grade students were introduced to database research, and 12th graders engaged in in-depth scholarly research for their QLI Research Projects.

National Honor Society Peer Tutoring
We have a group of incredible National Honor Society students who are available for peer tutoring after school in the library from 2:30 - 4:30 Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday every week. Students can come get help with their assignments or review concepts from class. National Honor Society students also do important work in the library by organizing and shelving books, setting up displays, and generally making the library the best that it can be.

Creativity, design, puzzles, and games in the library
The library offers plenty of opportunities for creativity, play, and self expression. These kinds of activities build community and are an important aspect of social-emotional learning. Students make friends, take a break from stress and routine, and develop new modes of expression through creativity, design, and collaboration.
