QTEL Framework for Language Development
Our school utilizes the Quality Teaching for English Learners(QTEL)[1] framework, which specifically targets the needs of English learners by providing research-based strategies to enhance both language development and academic success. The Principles of Quality Teaching for English Learners include:
Sustain Academic Rigor: Promote deep disciplinary knowledge by developing central ideas of each subject area.
Hold High Expectations: Engage students in challenging tasks while offering high levels of support to ensure success.
Engage in Quality Interactions: Foster interactions that are sustained, deep, and build relevant knowledge in the discipline.
Sustain a Language Focus: Explicitly teach disciplinary language, discuss language use, and highlight the characteristics of different genres and forms of discourse within each subject.
Develop Quality Curriculum: Ensure that curriculum is designed with long-term goals, is problem-based, and requires sustained attention beyond a single lesson.
